Authorities in Tennessee say a health care worker was fatally shot inside a clinic, and a man was arrested in connection with the killing.

WMC reports the shooting took place in an exam room between a patient and a doctor at the Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics, located about 35 minutes from downtown Memphis.

In Philadelphia, a family alleged that a birth injury had led to their baby’s cerebral palsy. They sued Penn Medicine and were awarded $183 million.

In Boise, a jury recently awarded the state’s second-highest-ever award, $13.5 million, in a suit against an emergency medicine group that was filed after a patient was disabled by a stroke. This verdict is especially notable because Idaho usually caps noneconomic damages at $400,000—but exceptions are possible if the jury determines that the plaintiff’s injuries arise out of “out of willful or reckless misconduct.” The jury’s holding that misdiagnosing the patient’s evolving stroke arose out of willful or reckless misconduct added over $8 million in noneconomic damages to their verdict.

Each of these verdicts shows us something about social inflation, a little-understood trend that is driving up costs for medical professionals all over the country.

Using insurance company annual statement data, the “Medical Malpractice Claims-Made Social Inflation and Loss Development Report” estimates that in the decade ending in 2021, between $2.4 and $3.5 billion, or 8 to 11 percent, of all medical malpractice losses incurred by physician-focused insurers stemmed from social inflation.

The ability to prescribe controlled substances based on telehealth patient visits was set to expire when the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency ends on Thursday, May 11^th. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) initially issued two proposed rules establishing new policies for controlled substance prescriptions based on telehealth visits, one for buprenorphine and one for other controlled substances. After receiving more than 38,000 comment letters, however, the DEA has decided to extend [federalregister.gov] the same policies that have been in place during COVID for an additional 6 months, until November 11, 2023.

·    The deadline for satisfying this new training requirement is the date of a practitioner’s next scheduled DEA registration submission—regardless of whether it is an initial registration or a renewal registration—on or after June 27, 2023.

·    This one-time training requirement affirmation will not be a part of future registration renewals.

·    How can practitioners satisfy this new training requirement?

·    There are multiple ways that practitioners can satisfy this new training requirement.

·    Treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of a substance use disorder; or

·    Safe pharmacological management of dental pain and screening, brief intervention, and referral for appropriate treatment of patients with or at risk of developing opioid and other substance use disorders.

·    The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM)

·    The American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP)

·    American Medical Association (AMA)

·    The American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or any organizations accredited by the AOA to provide continuing medical education

·    The American Dental Association (ADA)

·    The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS)

·    The American Psychiatric Association (APA)

·    The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)

·    The American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA)

·    The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)

·    Any other organization accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical

·    Any other organization approved or accredited by the Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use, the ACCME, or the CCEPR
