Notes from the Advisory Council

I Am One of You
By Meghan Hayden, River Bend Bookshop (Glastonbury, CT)
The New Year begins for me with gratitude. River Bend Bookshop recently celebrated our first full year of business. I owe so much of it to your guidance and help along the way.

Before opening the shop, I visited 50 bookstores around the country. It was inspiring to see that a bookshop can take any form and find its own success. Every space I saw was unique. Every collection had its own voice.

Each of your stores contributed to the creation of ours. Owners and booksellers shared advice and encouragement freely, and continue to do so. Each time I make a huge mistake (often), I laugh with our booksellers that anyone can open a bookstore. No credentials required. It’s funny because it’s true. You didn’t get to interview me for the job; I was self-appointed. Yet, never have I felt for a second that being independent means being alone. I am one of you.

My shop benefits every day from the warm feelings people have about your independent bookstores. We receive credit for your ideas (people think we invented shelf talkers and funny sidewalk chalkboard signs). We are strengthened by your success and your generosity.

I owe a special thanks to stores participating in the ABACUS survey. Our business plan is based on the survey data, and budgeting learned in a 2016 Paz Workshop. ABACUS allowed me to see what was possible for our shop and break goals into manageable pieces. When we were falling behind, it gave us a push to hustle a little harder. When we were tracking, it gave us peace of mind to focus on other aspects of the business. I cannot overstate the importance of the information you shared. (If you aren’t participating in the ABACUS survey, please consider doing so. It is an investment the future of our industry.)

Our first year has been pure magic. There were all the startup challenges you would expect, all the painful lessons learned, all the clogging toilets everyone warned us about. There were also countless moments of pure joy and meaningful connection. This is the best job in the world. Thank you for being a part of our story.
Children's Buyer Summit
March 3-4, 2020
NEIBA & NAIBA are hosting another Children’s Book Buyer Summit in Rhinebeck, NY! This event is for buyers only. Space is limited to 12 NEIBA attendees on a first-come, first-served basis.  Registration for this event will open here, on EventBrite, Friday, 1/17 at 10 AM.

Four publishing houses will be in attendance, sponsoring our four meals. The publishers will each be doing something different — some will provide manuscripts for a 2020/2021 title looking for marketing ideas and cover design. Others may have editors on hand to talk about their acquisitions. They are each still working on ideas but this will be an opportunity to spend time with them and your fellow book buyers on focused projects. A large part of our time together will be in group discussion on challenges, ideas, tips, and discussing books. That agenda will be created by the participants in the summit. E-mail Beth Ineson ( Beth@NEBA.org ) for any topics or questions you want to discuss during our time together.

Registration is free and meals are provided. The hotel is $175/night, not including tax. For hotel reservations (you have to make your own), please call The Beekman Arms Inn at (845) 876-7077.
