Good News from the Road
By Maureen Karb, Como Sales
One of my favorite traditions at Workman is something they call "homeroom."  Every week publicity and sales gather in a morning meeting to share the weeks’ successes. I hope I’m not divulging any of their trade secrets here, but it was a part of the office culture I remember fondly, despite hating it at the time (prepping for it and speaking up in front of 30+ people was pretty stressful!)

I like to think that we accomplish something similar in our sales calls. Sure, you are buying books, but my favorite part of a meeting is chatting about what’s working in your store, what other stores are doing, and what’s happening in the book world. I’ve usually spent the days leading up to our call visiting stores you don’t get a chance to see very often, even if they are only a handful of miles away.

And so I thought I’d use this forum to share some good news I’ve seen since hitting the road in the new year. A few weeks ago I arrived at Blue Hill Book s in Blue Hill, Maine at exactly the same time as a bus load of high school students! Each student picked out a book relating to a theme they’d been studying, all paid for by their teacher. Later on that trip I visited Hello Hello Books and met Lacy Simons for the very first time. She has a lovely store and I was happy to see one of my books held a spot of honor on   their website in an awesome widget that displays their bestselling books.

After returning from Maine I stopped into Copper Dog Books which had a very successful first holiday. It’s so amazing to see new bookstore owners thriving despite the stress! I also had my first sales call with former rep Jill Cadogan at BookEnds Winchester .  We chatted about a variety of subjects, but I couldn’t help admiring  these pencils  and Jill mentioned they were one of their top selling items over the holidays! And last but not least, everyone should follow the  Bookloft  on social media because they are building their new location and it is so satisfying to watch!

That’s just a tiny taste of my first few weeks on the road, and certainly not all the good news. I hope this little burst of positivity will at the very least spread some good cheer, if not inspire you in your own business!
