Anderson accounting student Michelle Young is among the 253 students from U.S. colleges and universities selected to receive $10,000 scholarships from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. Michelle is working toward a Master of Accounting degree at Anderson, with a focus on auditing and taxation. She is also an intern for Schlenker & Cantwell, P.A., Certified Public Accountants. She plans to continue her career in public accounting after she completes her graduate degree.
“We’re thrilled that Michelle has received this scholarship award,” said Richard Brody, Ph.D., CPA, CFE, CGMA, FCPA, chair of Anderson’s accounting department.
“She serves as a role model to our accounting students. Not only did she excel academically as an undergraduate, she is gaining real-world accounting experience through her internship while also running a bakery business.”
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 directs that funds generated from the collection of PCAOB monetary penalties fund a merit scholarship program for students in accredited accounting degree programs. The PCAOB Scholars Program was created to identify eligible students and to award funds through the students’ educational institutions.
The program’s goals are to benefit outstanding students who are likely to become auditors and to make a difference to eligible students who might otherwise pursue a different career path. The PCAOB encourages participating colleges and universities to give special consideration to students from populations historically underrepresented in the accounting profession.
Congratulations, Michelle!
