Cocoa High JROTC Cadets Visit the AFTAC | |
The Cocoa High School JROTC cadets were invited to participate in a special field trip to Patrick Space Force Base to get a glimpse of the facility known as the Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC). Many active-duty service members never gain access to this facility due to the top-secret nature of its operations. The AFTAC focuses on STEM career fields such as chemistry, engineering, and marine biology.
During their visit, the cadets engaged in round-robin training, gaining hands-on experience in various areas such as analyzing seismic activity, separating elephant DNA, and the highlight of the day: eating gummy bears frozen with liquid nitrogen. The visit culminated in a competition where the cadets were given instructions to build airplanes using wood, foam, and paper to determine which one could travel the farthest.
Overall, the cadets discovered new and interesting career opportunities in the Air Force, as well as the civilian sector.

Take Stock in Children is a scholarship and mentoring program that serves Brevard Public Schools, students’ grades 7-12. Take Stock in Children, established in Brevard County in 1996, provides students from low-income and at-risk communities the opportunity to escape the cycle of poverty through education.
Take Stock in Children’s comprehensive services begin in middle school, continue through high school, and include transitioning to a vocational program or college. By maintaining good grades through high school, remaining drug and crime-free, and meeting weekly with an assigned mentor, Take Stock in Children students receive funding for two years of college or technical training.
This extensive support and mentoring system has resulted in Brevard County’s Take Stock students achieving a 100% high school graduation rate, with 97% of the program’s students attending college.
