It's that time of year again - Awards Season at IDEA.
Every year at the IDEA Annual Conference, two of the most important moments in the industry happen when we announce the IDEA System of the Year and The Joseph M. Brillhart IDEA Innovation Award winners.
Why are these awards so important? Because the winners represent the best real-world examples of the amazing work happening in our industry. And, at IDEA2024 in Orlando, June 17-20, we get to introduce them to the world.
The deadline to submit applications for SOYA or the Innovation Award is Friday, April 12. We strongly encourage you to submit your application to be considered for these prestigious awards.
| |
Created in 1992, the IDEA System of the Year (also known as SOYA) is the highest honor IDEA can confer on a district energy system, recognizing high-level performance, reliability, efficiency and industry engagement furthering the goals of the district energy industry. If your system fits that description, please submit.
|
The The Joseph M. Brillhart IDEA Innovation Award represents the best in public and private collaboration, where members share emerging best practices, new technologies and techniques and the tremendous value of collaboration within the industry.
The Joseph M. Brillhart IDEA Innovation Award is designed to create awareness of smaller projects and applications, not of the scale of IDEA System of the Year — processes that can be replicated and more widely used by others.
| |
|
Beginning in 2024, as unanimously decided by the IDEA Board, the IDEA Innovation Award has been renamed The Joseph M. Brillhart IDEA Innovation Award.
Joe worked for Johnson Controls, serving on the IDEA Board and Executive Committee for multiple terms and was IDEA Chair from 2012-2013. It was Joe’s idea to create the IDEA Innovation Award during his term as IDEA Chair in 2012-13. He felt there was a need to bring greater visibility to the innovation and partnering that happens among IDEA members and business partners at a more granular level.
Under Joe’s stewardship, we launched the Annual IDEA Innovation Award more than a decade ago. It has grown in participation and prestige ever since. As a memorial to Joe Brillhart, it is fitting and appropriate that going forward, we will continue to recognize his collegial and curious spirit by naming this prestigious award after Joe.

The Countdown Continues CampusEnergy2024
|
We get it, we all love to get away from the daily grind during the holidays and spend time with family and friends. And then, before you know it, 2024 is here and you realize that one of the biggest events of the new year, CampusEnergy2024, is right around the corner and you need to be there.
If you haven't registered for CampusEnergy2024 yet, you still have time, but considering that we are once again on a record pace for registrations (nearly 20% ahead of last year at this time), you might want to finalize your plans soon. And, similar to the holidays, it is a fantastic opportunity to spend time with your IDEA family and friends.
So join us and more than 1100 district energy professionals at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square, February 20-23. There, you'll learn from industry experts, discover the latest technologies and connect with colleagues as we build the "Bridge to the Future" for district energy on campuses.
Here are the key details:
-
Nearly 850 people are already registered for Campus, on pace to break last year's attendance record of more than 1100 attendees. If you're planning on attending, make sure you register ASAP.
-
Even though we expanded the exhibit hall this year, the CampusEnergy2024 Exhibit Hall demand for booth space has never been greater. Unfortunately, all booth spaces are sold out, but please contact Tanya Kozel immediately to add your company's name to the wait list or chat with her about the limited number of sponsorship opportunities available.
-
The Preliminary Education Program has been recently updated - take a peek at the more than 100 podium and poster presentations we have in store for you. And if you miss a session, no problem! You'll be able to view recordings of the sessions after the conference concludes.
-
We've also published the preliminary lineup for our two workshops, Thermal Distribution and Emerging Tech in District Energy. Both will be well worth coming to San Francisco a day early - check out the diverse lineup of presenters and topics.
-
The IDEA Hotel Room Block Hotel is nearly sold out. If you are planning on attending, please reserve your hotel room now. Please note, IDEA does not use a hotel room booking agency. If you are contacted by someone (i.e. Conventioneers, etc.) offering to book your guest room, do not to use them. Please contact IDEA instead.

|
If you work at a campus, this is an opportunity like no other to connect with colleagues facing the same issues and opportunities as you, to learn from one another, and come back to work with fresh ideas for 2024.
If you're from our business partner community, this is an excellent chance to meet with potential customers, to learn first-hand what their greatest challenges are and how you can help.
But don't take our word for it, watch our video featuring last year's Campus attendees about why you should attend CampusEnergy2024.
We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to save. See you in SF this February!

In Vancouver, innovative technology is harnessing heat from wastewater and using it as a renewable energy source to heat homes.
When the occasional snowfall dusts the streets of Vancouver in the midst of winter, the layer of white can quickly become punctuated by steaming openings where it has already melted. The access holes to the drains below ground are caused by the heat flowing through the city's sewers, warming up the pavements.
"There's enough heat in the sewerage system to literally heat up neighbourhoods," remarks Derek Pope, manager of neighbourhood energy for the city of Vancouver, Canada. "That's what we've been doing here in False Creek since 2010."
Residents in the 6,210 apartments in the False Creek neighbourhood get their heat from renewable energy sources, with sewage heat being the largest contributor.
At False Creek's sewage heat recovery system, construction is underway to expand. Heat pump capacity is being tripled from 3 megawatts (MW) to more than 9MW.
"That's a big milestone for the utility," says Pope who has noticed "an explosion" of district energy systems across the Greater Vancouver region, with many using or planning to use sewage heat as their primary source of energy, as opposed to fossil fuels such as natural gas...Continue Reading
