Batteries run dry? Give recycling a try!

Don't let your old batteries go to waste, give them a fresh start this season! From April 20 to 24, simply place your used household batteries in a clear, sealed plastic bag, and set it on top of your closed green bin on your regular collection day.

By taking part in our annual spring curbside battery collection, you can help keep mercury, cadmium and other heavy metals out of our environment. Since the first curbside battery collection in 2012, Durham Region residents have diverted more than 513 tonnes (1,149,770 pounds) of household batteries from the waste stream.

Create a backyard oasis with native shrubs from LEAF

Durham Region residents can enhance their yards with native shrubs through the Region’s partnership with Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF). A wide selection of species is available, and shrubs come with mulch and care resources; planting services are offered at an additional cost, or residents can choose delivery only.

LEAF also offers themed bundles—such as Butterfly, Edible, Native Bee, Privacy, Shade, Small Yard and Songbird—where you can get four shrubs for the price of three. Shrubs add beauty and privacy to your yard, while supporting local wildlife.

Apply today at yourleaf.org to help grow a thriving, wildlife friendly yard.

Durham Region wins Good Roads’ Municipal Paving Award

Durham Region is proud to share that, in partnership with Road Surface Recycling Limited, we’ve received Good Roads’ 2025 Municipal Paving Project of the Year Award. The award highlights our pilot project for road rehabilitation using Hot-In-Place Recycling (HIR) technology.

HIR is an innovative approach that was tested to determine if it would repair asphalt, extend the life of the road and reduce waste. We continue to adopt and test new technologies like HIR, through pilot projects like this to learn what works best in real-world conditions, reduce our carbon footprint and meet our climate goals.
