Pass with care, leave one metre

A little space makes a big difference. When passing or riding alongside cyclists on the road, leave one metre of space between your vehicle and the bicycle. All road users share responsibility in keeping everyone safe! For more information about the one metre passing law, visit durham.ca/OneMetre. Durham Region is working to create safer roads for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists through the Durham Vision Zero Strategic Road Safety Action Plan. Take part in Durham’s treasure hunt

Durham Region’s Curbside Giveaway Day is back on this Saturday, June 13, and you’re invited to take part!

Here’s how it works: on the event day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., residents place unwanted items (in good condition!) – clearly marked as “Free” – on their curb for anyone to pick up. At the end of the day, residents return unclaimed items to their home.

Check out the full details, including acceptable items, at durham.ca/WasteEvents.

Share the road from field to field

Share the road! Farmers often use public roads to get from field to field (day and night). Watch for farm machinery and vehicles with an orange emblem on the back – this means it’s a slow-moving vehicle.

Please be courteous when encountering farm equipment to ensure safe travel on our road system.

For more tips on sharing the road with farm equipment, visit durham.ca/DurhamWorks.

Watch for cyclists at crossrides

As part of Durham Vision Zero, crossrides are installed along multi-use path routes at intersections throughout the region. A crossride is a dedicated space at an intersection where cyclists can legally ride their bicycle through the intersection without dismounting.

Cyclists and scooters can travel quickly on crossrides, so drivers are reminded to make sure both the road and multi-use path are clear in both directions before proceeding to keep everyone safe.
