Congressional Update

New Legislation August 5-6 Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL-05) introduced two bills aimed at improving the nation’s power infrastructure and streamlining the regulatory process to help put the country on the path to a sustainable future. The Streamlining Interstate Transmission of Electricity (SITE) Act (H.R. 4971) and the Advanced Energy Technologies and Grid Efficiency Act (S. 2659, H.R. 4972) would create jobs, stimulate the economy, and advance the transition to clean energy. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL-16) and Mike Doyle (D-PA-18) introduced the Preserving Existing Nuclear Energy Generation Act (H.R. 4960) to establish a financial credit program for certain civil nuclear power plants and authorize funding for “nuclear closure communities.” This legislation is the House companion to certain provisions found in a Senate proposal reported favorably by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on July 14; it was subsequently included in the Senate infrastructure package. Sen. Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM) introduced the Establishment of Community Solar Programs Act of 2021 (S. 2637). Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) introduced the Main Street Efficiency Act of 2021 (S. 2665) to help small business become more energy efficient.    August 3 Rep. Deborah Ross (D-CA-02) introduced a bill to establish a working group on electric vehicles (H.R. 4920), on their development, adoption, and integration. Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO-06) introduced the Community Vehicle Charging Act (H.R. 4908), legislation that would make clean vehicles accessible to all. Reps. Mike Doyle (D-PA-18) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-01) introduced the bipartisan Clean Hydrogen Energy Act (H.R. 4909), which aims to make an historic investment in researching and developing clean hydrogen technologies.
