Fullerton College's "Who Needs Feminism?" Campaign

Fullerton College students Victoria Sanchez, Monica Choi, and Serena Porter (pictured above) with a few members of the League of Women Voters of North Orange County, just some of the women who broke barriers and paved the way for the next generation of women leaders.

Victoria Sanchez, Monica Choi, and Serena Porter started the Fullerton College "Who Needs Feminism?" Campaign after being inspired by Duke University's project: http://whoneedsfeminism.tumblr.com/

The concept is simple - ask the women and men of Fullerton College to pose with a whiteboard with the answer to the question "Who Needs Feminism?"  So Hornets, grab a whiteboard and send in your answer.  Or stop by their table in the Quad next Wednesday, May 9th from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and they'll provide the whiteboard, pens, and take the picture for you.

Advice from our Study Abroad students - Go to Rome!

The most common response when I talk to students about the Study Abroad program is, "I'd love to, but there's no way I could."  Students put up roadblocks before they even find out the details.  Yes, it might be a sacrifice and cost more than staying in Fullerton, but not going is the biggest regret from our alumni, "I should have done the Study Abroad trip when I had the chance."  Once you're working in your career or taking care of your family, the luxury of taking a 9-week trip to another country might be out of reach.

Before you convince yourself there's no possible way you could Study Abroad in Rome, Italy next spring (or in Spain in 2014), please read the comments from our current students studying abroad in Paris and then go to the information meeting on Wednesday, May 3.

"I never thought that I was going to be able to afford living in Paris at this age. I am only 20 years old and I paid for the entire program with my own money. I had two jobs, I gave up my social life almost completely because I knew the experience of studying abroad in Paris was way more valuable than anything else. It has been the most amazing experience of my life and worth every single penny I earned. My parents did not give me any money to pay for the program, if a 20 year old girl working two part time jobs and a full time student can make this experience happen than I believe anyone can. Trust me you will not regret studying abroad. You just have to want it and make it happen, dreams do come true. Mine did.
--Vanessa Roman, Paris (pictured below)

"At first I only thought of it as a fantasy, but as time went on I made this program a major goal in my life. Since my parents are not residents, traveling was not really an option when I was younger, and when we did travel it was at a great risk and with sacrifice. I am a film production and screenwriting major and Paris is full of cinemas and museums to awe and inspire me; seeing different cultures and point of views will broaden my knowledge of the audience outside of the United States.  Since I made the program a goal I have cut back on my spending as far as I could. I have started making shirts, something I have wanted to do for a while, and selling them. I have been investing my money and selling wherever and whenever I can. But this didn't just show me how to work and manage a fund raiser, but that I am not alone trying to meet my goal. My mother, aunt, and girlfriend helped me sell and make shirts. As well as my friends, and frequent customers, who helped by buying them. I have found moral support from everyone from friends and family to co-workers and teachers."

Showings take place at 2 pm and 8 pm in the Bronwyn Dodson Theatre. Admission is $15 general and $12.50 for students and seniors.

Accepting Applications - Honors Ambassadors

We are now accepting applications for 2012-13 Honors Ambassadors. Stop by the Honors Program office to pick up an application.

The Honors Ambassadors Program selects Honors students to promote the Honors program to the community and prospective students and to help represent the campus. Honors Ambassadors help recruit new students by attending high schools and college fairs, promote the program on campus, give campus tours, assist in the planning and implementation of social events, and act as liaisons between the Honors student body and the Honors staff.

"Being a Fullerton College Honors Ambassador was an amazing experience. I felt extremely involved in the campus community. I wrote an article for the newsletter, gave multiple campus tours to high school students and incoming freshmen, helped plan Honors events, and represented the Honors Program at college fairs. It looks great on my resume and it was a great for networking--I even met one of my best friends! Even though I have already transferred, I continue to strive to support my alma mater and our amazing Honors Program, especially because I was an Ambassador. Becoming an Honors Ambassador at Fullerton College was one of the best things I've ever done".

--Beverly Falco, Chapman University

Faculty Interview by Honors Ambassador Michael Herron

Honors Faculty: Anne-Lynne Negus

How long have you been at Fullerton College?

I have been teaching at Fullerton College since 1988.

What do you like best about teaching in the Honors Program?

The students seem to care about the subject and meet you more than halfway. They like research. Other honors teachers and students create a fellowship of like-minded people-- a school within a school.

What's your educational background?

I received a BA and MA from UC Berkeley in Modern European History and an MA and PhD from UCLA in Ancient Near Eastern Languages and Cultures.

What advice do you have for the Honors students?

Appreciate the teachers who want to challenge you and help you to grow as a person and as a student. Engage with your student peers. Be a citizen of the world. Develop open-mindedness and remain intellectually curious your whole life. Read broadly.

What is your favorite hobby? In other words, what are your passions?

Exploring is my absolute favorite hobby-new places, new ideas, new people. This includes road trips, traveling and living in other circumstances, trying new things, and research. Ancient Egypt is also another passion of mine.

What is your favorite book and movie?

I don't have any favorites. I try to read all kinds of current books across the disciplines. I love historical fiction and enjoy watching foreign movies.

What do you do when you're not teaching at Fullerton College?

During vacations, I travel because I have family in other states and overseas. On weekends, I explore with friends.

What do you enjoy about teaching your subject?

My subject matter involves exciting developments in history, anthropology, and philosophy in particular. I love the students. I just like being with people when they're happy about learning. I love Fullerton College; the personnel here are inspiring and amiable. There's so much good you can do in this supportive environment, so many programs to help young people navigate through a challenging period of life.

Anything else you would like the Honors students to know?

I have yet another piece of advice: Take advantage of the activities offered in the Honors newsletter. Our excellent Honors Program offers you opportunities that do not come often in life.

Summer Honors Classes -Clearance Forms

This summer, we have three "stacked" courses where honors students will enroll in the honors course and the course will be taught with the regular section of the course. Honors students will receive an honors syllabus with additional assignments in addition to the regular syllabus. Honors students can enroll in one honors course this summer. These courses have limited enrollment:

Honors Physical Anthropology

    MTWR 10:40 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Professor Cadena

Honors History of the U.S. II

    MTWR 10:40 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Professor Ashenmiller

Honors Intro to Philosophy

    MTWR 2:30 - 5:20 p.m. Professor Hanson

You need to pick up a Clearance Form from the Honors Office and take it to the Counseling Department to be cleared for the course.  You will then be allowed to enroll in the course during the regular registration process.

Honors Counselor Linda Kelly-Mandich will be available to clear you for a summer course on April 30 from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.  If you can't make it during this time, you'll need to visit any available counselor during Walk-In Counseling.

UCLA CCCP Scholars Program 2012-13

UCLA

UCLA's Center for Community College Partnerships is pleased to announce the CCCP Scholars Program 2012-13. To become a scholar, students enter during the summer in any one of our summer programs and make a commitment to complete all the requirements throughout the academic year.

Please take a moment to review the requirements at our website at
http://www.cccp.ucla.edu/
and encourage students to complete the application. Complete applications require the supplemental form, the recommendation form (where appropriate) and copy of unofficial transcripts. You can also review the attached handout that explains the programs, the application and selection process and the different deadlines depending on the summer program selection.

If selected, a scholarship will cover the cost of the program with the expectation of students completing all requirements. In the last few years, students who completed successfully the CCCP scholars program and applied to UCLA, were admitted at a 65% rate or better (compared to the average 28% admissions rate).

Should you have any questions, please refer to our website or contact us by email at cccp@college.ucla.edu<mailto:cccp@college.ucla.edu> or by phone at (310) 267-4445.
