Board of Pensions Expands Support

In recognition of growing need and rising costs, the Board of Pensions is broadening eligibility for Assistance Program support and increasing grant amounts, effective Jan. 1, 2027. Subsidies for the Shared Ministry Program will also increase as the agency reinforces its commitment to supporting congregations that are creatively responding to their circumstances to call full-time pastoral leadership.

The salary cap for Child Care Support eligibility will increase to the median effective salary ($74,400 for 2027), excluding manse value. To further expand its reach, this assistance grant will become available to ministers employed by presbyteries, agencies and other ministries who meet eligibility criteria. The grant was introduced as a pilot in April 2026 to support ministers and commissioned pastors serving congregations who have young children.

Building Community Through Youth Retreats

Posted on 10/28/2026 by Montreat Conference Center

Friendships aren’t built overnight. It takes time, shared experiences, and moments of intentional conversation to form those bonds. When youth groups are only able to spend a few hours together each week, it can feel like it’s taking forever for your group to become close. However, we find that spending an extended period of time together during a conference or retreat can supercharge the bonds of friendship among your group, allowing members to discover what it’s like to truly belong to a community of faith.

Below, we’ve collected a few of our favorite tips and tricks for engaging young people during a retreat or conference at Montreat. Keep them in mind as you start planning your next event! [view the remaining article]

Announcing Our 2027 Montreat Youth Conference and Middle School Conference Themes

The wait is finally over! Today we are excited to announce the conference themes for our upcoming youth and middle school conferences. As our two signature events for youth, the themes for these conferences are often highly anticipated. Keep reading to see what’s in store for 2027!

However, before we jump right in, we would like to share a little bit about the theme selection process. People often incorrectly assume that Montreat staff are responsible for picking the theme each year. As it turns out, the themes for these events are actually selected by the conference Planning Teams — and it’s a job they take very seriously! The process begins with time spent in worship, study, and reflection as team members consider the needs of today’s youth and how the upcoming conferences might respond to those needs…

Young Adult Volunteers Speak of Their Work and Its Impact.

More than 2,000 young people have served as YAVs over the past 33 years, the Rev. Destini Hodges, YAV manager, told those in attendance via a recorded message. This year, 47 young adults are serving in nine sites across the country and around the world.

“Thank you for believing in young adults and this ministry,” Hodges told donors, and for “continuing to make possible” the YAV tagline: a year of service for a lifetime of change.
