Kicks Off 2025 Spring Season with New Shows, Road Trips


The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour kicks off its 2025 spring season on Thursday, February 6, at 6 pm at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center.


Guests for the season premiere will include Memphis poet Maria Zoccola, country songwriter Amber Rae Dunn, and Oxford-based blues singer, Edna Nicole. The show is hosted by Jim Dees with Paul Tate & The Yalobushwhacker Big Band featuring the Thacker Horns.

William Boyle Visits Off Square Books for his new book, "Saint of the Narrows Street" Tuesday February 4


William Boyle in conversation with Ace Atkins for Saint of the Narrows Street, a searing novel about family secrets and the consequences of one violent, impulsive act.


William Boyle is the author of eight books set in and around the southern Brooklyn neighborhood of Gravesend, where he was born and raised. His books have been nominated for the Hammett Prize, the John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger Award in the UK, and the Grand Prix de Littérature Policière in France, and they have been included on best-of lists in Washington Post, CrimeReads, and more. He currently lives in Oxford, Mississippi

It is difficult to find winter flowering plants, but Temple Bells (Pieris ryukyuensis) is a stunning example. This evergreen shrub is native to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan and an elegant, graceful, form. Temple Bells flowers fit beautifully into a shady garden, making a striking statement alongside other acid-loving plants like camellias and azaleas. This plant offers a graceful form, delicate blooms, and year-round appeal.

Behind every tray of balanced meals and carefully chosen ingredients lies the unseen work of the Institute of Child Nutrition. For 35 years, the institute has helped improve the meals – and lives – of millions of children nationwide by empowering the professionals who prepare their meals. Housed in the School of Applied Sciences at the University of Mississippi, the institute has become a critical research and training hub for child nutrition professionals nationwide.

University of Mississippi researcher receives Air Force grant to innovate air flow dynamics


The same flow dynamics that allow sharks to swim easily through Earth's oceans could also allow humans to fly faster through the air, according to a University of Mississippi professor. His research aims to prove it.

Oxford Middle School Hosts Princess Leilani Elyse Allen of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians for an Inspiring Educational Experience


Oxford Middle School recently had the privilege of hosting Princess Leilani Elyse Allen of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Princess Leilani captivated the audience with a live demonstration of one of her favorite games—Choctaw Stickball. Additionally, she presented a collection of traditional clothing, intricately woven baskets, handcrafted drums, and more. Princess Leilani even described the symbolism behind her own attire, including her crown, dress, and jewelry.

The Local Voice editor Nature Humphries of Oxford, Mississippi, has been awarded a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission. This grant is a portion of the more than $1.7 million in grants MAC awarded in Fiscal Year 2025 and will be used to produce, print, and distribute this reading edition.

Asparagus fern (Asparagus Densiflorus Sprengeri) is not a fern at all, but a member of the Asparagaceae family. It is a close relative of true asparagus and is edible.
