"Restoring Soul and Society from War:
A Call to America's Faith Communities"
A workshop for faith leaders
This three-day workshop will equip and empower lay leaders and clergy from faith communities to tend to the moral injuries and soul wounds that result from war and military service, drawing from the unique resources of their respective traditions and from assets in their local communities. Our work will be framed by two important questions:
(1) What is the pastoral imperative for faith communities to tend to the moral, spiritual, and emotional wounds of war among our veterans and their families?
(2) What is the prophetic imperative for faith communities to serve as a moral compass for the nation?
Participating congregations and faith-based organizations are encouraged, where possible, to register teams from their community who are committed to implementing the lessons learned from the workshop.
May 20-22, 2014
Tuesday - Registration-6pm, Workshop-7 pm
Wednesday 9am-5pm - Community Interfaith Service 7:30pm

OUTDOOR MINISTRIES
Did you know that Hartman Center is becoming a Regional Camp and Conference Center? Three years ago, the Christian Church (Disciples) closed their eastern camp. Last summer Hartman Center became their camp of choice. Since Mensch Mill is currently shuttered, we are happy to welcome our brothers and sisters from Pennsylvania Southeast and Penn Northeast. We have become ACA (American Camp Association) accredited. Spread the good news about Hartman Center. Let your community as well as your church know we exist. Camps begin the week of June 15 with at least five different camp offerings each week. The final week of camp is July 27-August 2. For more information go to www.hartmancenter.com |
Creating Caring Congregations: Creating the "I-Thou" Moment
Free Mental Health Ministries & Advocacy Workshop
It's difficult to exaggerate the broken state of mental health care in America. Of the one in five Americans with a mental illness, those with the most common conditions - anxiety, depression, and substance abuse disorders - usually don't have access to care or can't afford it. One-quarter of those who ever sought treatment did so from a religious leader. Nearly one quarter of those seeking help from clergy in a given year have the most seriously impairing mental disorders.
The Lehigh County Conference of Churches Interfaith in Action Committee believes faith communities are in a unique position to address the spiritual needs of congregants by being intentional about inviting persons with mental illness to worship, offering prayer groups and opening the doors to a variety of small support groups. Welcoming and hospitality require us to reach out to persons in a way that allows for the mutual exchange of joys and concerns. When we take the time to really get to know another person, the barriers between "us" and "them" break down. Our goal is to develop relationships that will serve as the foundation for the caring community we seek to create. Please join us to learn more about how Faith Leaders shape and work effectively on the front line for people (and their families) dealing with distress or illness.
We welcome our ministers, priests, imams, rabbis and interested congregants especially greeters, ushers and lay leaders to join us for an evening of prayerful reflection and dialogue leading to a commitment (covenant) to be intentional about becoming a welcoming congregation.
Please register at 610-433-6421
