I have been in prayer and sorrow this week, as many of you have, after the weekend shootings in El Paso and Dayton, and last night’s stabbing in Southern California. Once again hate, racism, and violence have combined to rock our nation. Praying this week has helped me a little, but I lament the lack of affirmative action to counter the hateful rhetoric, the violence, the diatribes of blame and fear. My friends, I believe it is time to do more than pray.
No matter your political party, your faith tradition, or your belief about Second amendment rights, the mass killing of innocent people in America must stop. The El Paso and Dayton shootings were numbers 250 and 251 in the first 217 days of 2019. More than 8,000 people have died from shootings in the US in 2019. Whatever your personal opinions, we, as a nation, as a people, as Christians must call for peace and a reduction in violence.
Whether you believe gun control is the appropriate response, or providing more mental health services is the appropriate response, or anti-racism education is the appropriate response, it is time for people of faith to speak out, to act rather than to simply pray. I will not define what your beliefs or actions will be. I will not urge you to approach the issue from a particular perspective. I will only urge you to act. Edmund Burke said, “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph, is for good men (sic) to do nothing.” It is time to act.
Connect yourself with the community or group addressing this violence in the way that best aligns with your personal belief system and your personal conscience. But my friends, the time has come to act on our faith, to act on our love of neighbor. Please find a way to live out your faith as a beacon of hope, compassion, and peace-making in our world.
    In hope,  Bonnie
