Palm Beach's plan to bury all overhead utility lines on the island has ignited a debate about the pros and cons of an underground system. Proponents say that, apart from their aesthetic superiority, buried power lines eliminate service interruptions caused by storm winds or conflicts with tree limbs.

Construction started in the summer on the first phase of town-wide utility undergrounding, but officials say it's never too late to look for ways to save money and improve. A professional review of the town's undergrounding master plan is in the hands of Town Council and Underground Utilities Task Force members.

Palm Beach Recreation Center Design Changes Save $1 Million
Over the summer, while a lawsuit stalled construction of a new recreation center, the town's project team tweaked the plans to save nearly $1 million. The savings was mainly achieved by moving an entryway arch that will connect the parking lot at the southeast corner of the property with the new recreation center campus.

Brett Madison Winner
Mayor Gail Coniglio presented the Town Employee of the Year Award at the Chamber of Commerce Breakfast this morning. The winner is Brett Madison, Town of Palm Beach Facilities Maintenance Division Manager.
Mr. Madison oversees 14 employees and is responsible for the 8 parks, town beaches, and street and public land maintenance.

The Civic Association received a tip from Diane Buhler, founder of the Friends of Palm Beach - Keeping Our Beaches Clean, that small biodegradable wooden science 'drift cards' are washing up on our beaches and that some have been found on Midtown Beach.
