Get Involved!

Pavilion Lake Invasive-Free Challenge

Month 2

Join AVIRT to make October our biggest volunteer turnout ever!

Name: Pavilion Lake Invasive-Free Challenge

Date: Sunday, October 19

Available Times: 9AM - 11AM

Pavilion Lake, Ashburn Village’s most popular destination, is home to at least 25 species on the Virginia Invasives List. These invasives are crowding out and taking over the native trees, bushes, and flowers there. So for the next 12 months, AVIRT will focus on creating an invasive-free lake in the heart of our HOA.

In September, fifteen AVIRT volunteers treated 38 of the largest Bradford/Callery pears and white mulberries in preparation for them to be cut down later this fall. (And they saved a yew bush and a native hackberry tree from vines too!)

On October 19, we will tackle the hundreds of invasive pear and mulberry saplings encircling the lake.

We need as many of our experienced volunteers and as many new faces as possible. You will learn to identify Bradford/Callery pears and white mulberries and use hand tools to cut them to the ground and treat them so they stop spreading. The more people we have, the more saplings we can remove.

(The Pavilion Lake Invasive-Free Challenge will continue throughout fall and winter and into next spring with additional workdays to remove invasive bushes and vines most easily handled during non-growing months.)
