There's nothing more invigorating than returning to a college campus, especially if you're not the one being graded.
Last week I had the extreme pleasure of being on a review panel for the Clemson School of Architecture. The occasion was the presentation of design plans for a hopefully new, renovated campus equestrian center. This has a been a year-long project spearheaded by architect John Blackburn, a Clemson alum. John specializes in equestrian facilities around the world. Students were charged with planning a new center in the existing location using new construction and ideas and saving whatever old buildings made sense. The Clemson equestrian center is the center for the school's breeding program, the equestrian team's training, and lab space for the equine business students. They also do some boarding, give lessons to the public and host a therapeutic riding program. The project was cross-disciplinary and included architecture students as well as landscape architecture students. Equine business students weighed in on costs and revenue streams. The review panel included faculty, architects from across the state and then a few at-large people like me. Presentations started at 1 pm and went until dark. The students were encouraged to think beyond the same old tried and true. Plans included barns, labs, a covered arena that incorporated office space and stalls, English ring, Western ring, storage, shade shelters (it is South Carolina after all), covered spectator seating, visitor kiosk and more. There were accommodations for solar panels and rain collection. And of course there was the boring stuff like parking and waste water. A few of the designs (we had renderings and 3-D models to look at) were very forward thinking - like if the Jetsons were taking riding lessons.
It was an exciting day. It's always fun to be around college students and see their passions. The new equestrian center is not yet funded, but when it is, they are ready with some terrific innovative equestrian design.

Returns to Tryon

The documentary has been critically acclaimed. Dutch immigrant Harry deLeyer journeyed to the United States after World War II and developed a one-of-a-kind relationship with a broken down Amish plow horse he rescued off a slaughter truck bound for the glue factory. Harry paid eighty dollars for the horse and named him Snowman. In less than two years, Harry & Snowman went on to win the triple crown of show jumping, beating the nation's blue bloods. They were famous in their day and traveled around the world together. Their chance meeting at a Pennsylvania horse auction saved them both and crafted a friendship that lasted a lifetime. Eighty-six year old Harry tells their Cinderella love story firsthand, as he continues to train on today's show jumping circuit.

New Exec of Masters of Foxhounds Association Touts Tryon Horse Country in
Chronicle Interview
Beginning in the spring, the Masters of Foxhounds Association (MHFA) will welcome a new Executive Director. David Twiggs will take the reins of the organization dedicated to the preservation and advancement of foxhunting in North America. Twiggs is a Carolina boy, growing up in WNC and graduating from Appalachian State University with a degree in land use planning. He has been hunting for eight years in Georgia.
As a fox hunting enthusiast, Twiggs is especially interested in the conservation of land, especially for sport.

Do you have a particular favorite small town you've visited in your travels?
Mr. Twiggs: "There are so many, but I look at areas like Tryon, NC, Tryon is a good example. It's coming on like crazy, but it really does transition out into open space quickly. I like small concentrated villages that open up into open space, and that open space is valuable to that community as an economic driver, as a mixture of sporting and agriculture use and everything else."

Now is the time to prepare
Take a look around your barn. What would happen if a fire got too close? Dried leaves are like gasoline for a wildfire. Now is a good time to remove all dried leaves and debris around your barn and don't forget the back side.
In extreme emergencies, sometimes horses just need to be turned out to save them. Have a halter nearby that has your name attached somehow i.e. piece of tape, luggage tag, etc.
For evacuations, make sure that you have current coggins in your truck for all horses.
Does your horse easily load on your trailer or a strange trailer? Don't wait for a emergency to practice loading. Make sure now your horses will load under stress.
For Polk County residents, please go register with the
Sheriff's Department alert system. Emergency information can easily be disseminated through text and email. For non-Polk residents, please call your local emergency management contact and ask how you can be alerted to emergencies.
If evacuation becomes necessary, many can go to friends' farms but please have that conversation before an emergency. Locally we have two evacuation facilities, Harmon Field and FENCE. CALL FIRST to make sure they have availability and what they require.There is no charge for stalls in emergency situations. Users must bring their own feed, buckets, shavings and take care of their own horses.

Marydell Farm Welcomes Home Don Principe
Marydell Farm's Don Principe has had a stellar breeding and performance career. Born in 1999, he is by the "stallion of the Century" Donnerhall, and out of a long line of States Premium mares. The "Prince" has taken five riders to the FEI levels with two of them earning the coveted gold medal from USDF.
His offspring are winning internationally, including Doctor Wendell MF, an approved breeding stallion now in Germany.
Marydell Farm also welcomes Kaitlin Blythe.
Kaitlin has been a working student for several top trainers including Jim Koford (Don Principe's first rider), Brendan Curtis and most recently was assistant trainer to JJ Tate. Kaitlin has been riding most of her life and has many achievements to her credit.
"I am so excited to have Prince home with us after so long. Now, he will be taking a sixth rider, Kaitlin, to compete in the Under 25 division also known as the Brentina Cup," says owner Maryanna Haymon.
Marydell Farm welcomes visitors with an advance call. Prince loves to have folks drop by and admire him.

Artist: Edee Weigel
Weigel grew up in Los Angeles.and attended Art School in several informal camps as a teenager.
She attended water color classes at Laguna Beach School of Art 1980-82 . Weigel is owner of Weigel Stables in Montana and has showed horses on the West Coast Hunter Jumper Circuit. Weigel would spend her idle time between classes drawing and painting. She still enjoy judging and teaching clinics and just paints for fun these days.
