NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

A COLLABORATION MAKES THE ART SING
November 27, 2019, The New Haven Independent, by Brian Slattery- "The piece is already playful enough, an energetic overlapping of fabric patterns and vivid colors. There are photographs of trees and what looks like a hotel room. There are also photographs of statues, but taken as if by a 12-year-old or someone with a fun sense of humor, because the cropping of the photos lops off the heads and draws the viewer's eye to the statues' naked posteriors. Then there's the quote, emblazoned in white paint: " My stomach is the most violent of all of Italy."  The combination of all the elements in the piece - capped by a song lyric from the Legendary Tigermen - pulled a hearty laugh from this reporter. The possibility of laughter is among the genuine delights of "Like a Song I Heard the Other Day," a collaborative installament by artists Brian Keith Stephens and Pola Esther, working under the name Faloblu. The show runs at  Da Silva Gallery  in Westville through Dec. 7..." Click HERE to comment and read full article.

LOCAL LIT OPEN MIC @LOTTA STUDIO

Local Lit @ LOTTA will occur Tuesday, December 3rd at 7:00pm on The Range at LOTTA Studio, 911 Whalley Avenue, New Haven 06515.

Friendly banter, sharp stories, and plenty of refreshments are provided.  A suggested donation of $5-10 dollars helps maintain the series as a thread in the tapestry of arts events in New Haven. Submissions are rolling, and guidelines for 2020 events can be found at LocalLitAtLOTTA.com

Following each reading, event facilitator and local author Rebekah Fraser will lead a discussion with the audience. The event is part of the bi-monthly reading and talk-back series, Local Lit @ LOTTA, now in its second year.

Local Lit @ LOTTA welcomes Shelley Stoehr to the stage for the third time. The author of the first YA novel about self-injury, Crosses (1991), Stoehr is an MFA candidate and adjunct English instructor at Southern Connecticut State University. Her work has appeared in The North American Review, The Gordian Review, and ImageOutWrite. She received honorable mentions in the 2017 Writer's Digest Annual Competition and in the 2019 NAM Hearst Poetry Prize and was a runner-up in WOW! Women on Writing's flash fiction contest (2017). She will read a short work of magical realism, titled, Wings.

Lary Bloom's most recent book is the biography, Sol LeWitt: A Life of Ideas, published this year and now in its second printing by Wesleyan University Press. In all, he is the author or coauthor of ten books, including Letters from Nuremberg, The Test of Our Times, Lary Bloom's Connecticut Notebook, The Writer Within and The Ignorant Maestro. As a book doctor, he helped many writers publish. Bloom teaches memoir in Yale's Writers Workshop. He is also a playwright and lyricist, plays piano acceptably and, for peace of mind in these days of political turmoil, has limited his CNN watching to 23 hours per day.  He lives in East Rock with his wife, the poet Suzanne Levine. He will read The Warehouse of Good Intentions: a memoir of war and remembrance.

PAINTINGS ABOUT THE BINDING OF ISAAC BY RICHARD MCBEE

"Akeidah Verbs and Others," paintings by Richard McBee, is on exhibition through January 11. A reception for the artist will be held in the BEKI Art Gallery on December 5 from 6 to 8 pm, with a gallery talk by the artist at 7 pm.

"Akeida Verbs" is a series of 30 paintings that attempt to plumb the mystery of Abraham, Sarah and Isaac's terrifying final encounter with their God.

"By isolating almost every verb or significant action in Genesis Chapter 22 and related passages," McBee explains, "I hope to uncover and begin to make sense of this story's narrative streams in 30 crucial scenes. Slowing down and concentrating on individual words and moments provide a fractured cinematic experience unlike any previous artwork I have done on this subject over the last 40 years."

In contrast, "Urban Akeida Diptych" focuses on the Angel of Death's coming for the soul of Isaac; thwarted, the Angel of Death is forced to turn his icy gaze to the matriarch Sarah. "The result," McBee says, "is the final act of this tragic family."

McBee is a painter of Biblical subject matter and a writer on Jewish Art. From 2000 until 2014, he wrote about the Jewish Arts for The Jewish Press, and he continues to exhibit paintings, lecture, and curate Jewish art exhibitions. He is a founding member of the Jewish Art Salon. His website richardmcbee.com exhibits over 300 of his artworks and 250 of his Jewish Art reviews.  For more information:  office@beki.org
