CALL TO ARTISTS FOR GROUP SHOW @KLG
"I Am ..." - 4th Annual Juried Show - Open Call to Artists. How do you see yourself? How do others see you? What makes you, you? From selfies to personal branding to the complexities of identity politics, our carefully crafted personas are routinely broadcast to the world via the internet. The modern world revels in the revelation of a semblance of self, allowing us to conceal as much as we reveal. In this age of unprecedented exposure, how can an artist offer some fresh statement of self? While navigating the boundaries between the social and the private self, how do you publicly express something real and authentic? We invite you to share some aspect of the true you, whether through a traditional version of self portraiture or some other, less conventional window to your soul. We want to know you and see you as you see yourself. We welcome any media or form of self expression in your expression of self, anticipating that this collection of selves, of I AM, will become a powerful, revelatory voice of WE ARE. DEADLINE TO SUBMIT: Sunday, March 15th by 11;59pm. FULL DETAILS HERE

HOW TO SEE TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS WITH KIM WESTON @KEHLER LIDDELL
Repeats every week every Monday until Monday March 16 2020.
Join photographer Kim Weston for this 6-week photography workshop. Beginning February 10th - March 16th, this class will meet on Monday evenings from 7-9pm. Basic photography skills are expected.
About the Workshop: This workshop is about creating and looking at photographs - how to see them, analyze them, and how to take them to get what you want. Students should come with open minds and patience. Visuals will be shown in the first part of the workshop, followed by students showing their work. Students will be asked to bring printouts of their images to be critiqued. A small body of work will be developed by the end of the workshop. Please bring your portfolio, or 4-5 printed images, and your camera to the first class.

Registration Required:

About the Instructor: Kim Weston is a fine art photographer with a graphic design and painters background living in New York and Connecticut. She received her BFA from Cooper Union and is a recent MFA graduate from ICP-Bard College in Advanced Photographic Practice. Photography has allowed Kim Weston to teach, freelance in the commercial industry and be a visual artist. She questions how we can see the world when illusions surround us. Art promotes presence and an opportunity to see what's true in our spirit and the discrepancy in our everyday. The gestures seen in her images are the product of chance and intention.  kimwestonimages.com

PLEASE NOTE: This workshop is presented by ArtEcon Initiative ( www.ArtEconInitiative.org). ArtEcon's mission is to produce free, or low cost, accessible arts and community programs in the Westville-West Rock neighborhoods of New Haven, CT. Your class fee goes directly towards supporting the additional costs of an in-depth workshop. If you have the means, we would be grateful for any and all additional contributions, so that we can continue to offer accessible programs.

One of China's foremost Sixth Generation directors, Wang Xiaoshuai (Beijing Bicycle, Shanghai Dreams) tells a striking, autobiographical coming-of-age tale set in the final days of China's Cultural Revolution. Eleven-year-old Wang Han lives with his family in a remote village in Guizhou province. When Wang is selected to lead his school through their daily gymnastic regiment, his teacher recommends that he wear a clean, new shirt in honor of this important position - a request that forces his family to make a great sacrifice. A PATTERN LANGUAGE: GAR WATERMAN @KEHLER LIDDELL GALLERY

In A Pattern Language, sculptor Gar Waterman uses wooden foundry patterns from the National Pipe Bending Company (NPBC) to take a fresh look at a vestige of New Haven's industrial past. NPBC prospered for over 100 years on River Street in Fair Haven as a subsidiary of The Bigelow Boiler Company. Patterns were a key part of the cast iron production process, but orphaned by changing times and the exodus of manufacturing from the New England landscape. When NPBC closed, the company abandoned the building and left behind a stash of patterns in the attic. A classic example of artistic alchemy with the found object, the sculptures retain the pattern's original patina of time, use, and color while endowing them with new life and meaning.

Opening Reception; Saturday, February 15, 3-6pm, with Artist Talks at 3pm

Gar Waterman was born in Maine and grew up in Princeton, NJ. After graduating Dartmouth College, Waterman moved to Pietrasanta, Italy, where he lived for seven years and learned to carve stone. His sculpture combines observation of natural phenomena, sensual devotion to the tactile possibilities of material, and a model maker's tinkering sensibility. In 1996, the artist acquired an abandoned warehouse for $1 from the City of New Haven and transformed it into West Rock Studio, where he has lived and worked for the last 24 years.

Saturday, February 15, 3:00pm to 6:00pm

TOM EDWARDS, "DREAMS AND SHADOWS" @KEHLER LIDDELL GALLERY
Tom Edwards takes a look at what goes unnoticed in Dreams and Shadows. The artist states that his "primary concern is the visual development of images that describe dream-related memory and a nocturnal atmosphere."Presenting five triptychs developed in the realm of twilight and moonlight, and another created around memories, Edwards pairs these with a group of etchings printed on plaster that are related to the current political climate around border walls. The created dichotomy begs the viewer to consider the multifaceted darkness the artist is investigating on both a personal and national scale.

Opening Reception: Saturday, February 15th, 3-6pm, with Artist Talks at 3pm

Tom Edwards received a MFA from Yale University School of Fine Arts, majoring in painting and printmaking. He was awarded the Elizabeth Canfield Hicks Honorary Award in Drawing. He received a MA from Kansas State University, majoring in drawing and printmaking, where he also received a bachelor of architecture degree. Tom's work has been exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibits worldwide, and is held in numerous collections such as: Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC), Library of Congress (DC), National Museum of American Art (DC), Smithsonian Collection (DC), The New Britain Museum of American Art (CT), Baltimore Museum (MD), and The Boston Printmakers Permanent Collection (MA), to name a few.
