This Week in the Corridor
Corridor Seeking Information from H-2B Visa Users

Need some temporary labor? Have you explored the H-2B visa program? If so, the Corridor would like your name.

The H-2B program allows employers who meet specific regulatory requirements to bring foreign nationals to the United States to fill temporary nonagricultural jobs.

That phrase "specific regulatory requirements," which comes straight from the US Customers and Immigration Services website, is a loaded one. To petition for a nonimmigrant worker or workers, an employer must show that there are not enough U.S. workers able and willing to do the temporary work, that hiring H-2B workers will not adversely affect wages and working conditions for similarly employed U.S. workers, and that the need is temporary. The latter could mean the jobs are seasonal or caused by a specific business situation such as short-term peak demand.

Congress currently caps the number of H-2B visas at 66,000 per fiscal year, but with unemployment at 3.7 percent nationally and 2.5 percent here in Iowa, some federal lawmakers may be wondering if it's time to raise that number.

A pair of statewide trade associations recently asked the Corridor to identify businesses in our region currently using the H-2B program and those that would use the program or use it more aggressively if the cap was raised. If that's your company, please call or email Kiley Miller (712.264.3474; kmiller@lakescorridor.com). Your information will be kept strictly confidential unless and until you give the go-ahead to share it with lawmakers and the other trade associations.

To learn more about H-2B and other temporary worker programs, visit www.uscis.gov/working-united-states/temporary-nonimmigrant-workers. Please also let us know here at the Corridor as we may consider hosting a facilitated training session on the topic if there is demand.

News to Know
Iowa ranked 2nd-best state for drivers

With five Midwestern states topping the 2018 Bankrate Best States for Drivers studies, Iowa came in at #2, beat only by North Dakota. This ranking is based off of studies on commute times, expenses for maintenance and gas, road condition reports, fatality data, and insurance premium rates. Though the state ranked well, there are still improvements that can be made.

Check out where we rank in the various categories.
