Week of October 13, 2024

Seek good and not evil,

that you may live;

and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you,

just as you have said.

Hate evil and love good,

and establish justice in the gate;

it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts,

will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

St. Mary's Ministries 2024

A Fantastic Feast of St. Francis

We had our largest turnout ever for the Blessing of the Animals service on a glorious Fall evening in the garden. Thank you to Pastor Russ and Amy Crocker for creating such a beautiful service and thank you to Fr. Michael and Pastor Russ for bestowing blessings on all our furry friends. Each critter went home with their very own St. Francis medallion.

Cheers for Children's Church

Our first Children's Church was a success. Everyone had a good time and it was heart-warming for many to see the Children process out of the church for their lesson. The next Children's Church Sunday will be on November 3, 2024 during the 10:00 AM service. Please continue to spread the word to families with children from 4 to 12 years of age. All are welcome! Any questions? Please contact Barbara Hersey

In addition each Year reads the same two texts, one around Christmas, Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurman and the second around Easter,The Four Vision Quests of Jesus by Steven Charleston. The discussions are lively and engaging and the community that is developed is well worth your time. Speak with Amy Crocker if you are interested or have questions about the program.

A Note From the 1891 Society

According to the American Bar Association, only 33 percent of adult Americans have executed a medical directive. This directive dictates what measures you want before you die. It is very important to direct your loved ones as to your wishes while you are able to do so.

If you would like to learn more about the 1891 Society, please contact Linda Gadkowski at 508-292-5500.

Healthy Congregations Task Force Survey

In response to a resolution passed by the 238th Massachusetts Diocesan Convention in November 2023, a group of lay people and clergy have come together to ask what healthy congregations look like and how we can work to support them. They are beginning by looking at how we are living into our mission and vision as a diocesan community. Where do we shine and where can we, in collective ministry, find new ways to lift each other up?

Over the next few weeks, they will collect measurable data through Holy Cow Consulting’s “Landscape Assessment.” This will provide insight into the current health of our diocese, identify things that need immediate attention, and where people would like to put energy and resources in the future.

All people in the diocese are encouraged to participate in this process– lay folks and clergy alike. Click here to complete the Landscape Assessment

Your responses are anonymous; all completed surveys go directly to Holy Cow Consulting. Questions may be sent to the Task Force by emailing: HCTF@diomass.com.

Volunteer Opportunities within the St. Mary's Community

A Note from the Newcomers' Committee

Become A Greeter!

Simply showing up 15-20 minutes before any of our 3 services to welcome newcomers.   Best of all, no prior commitment or sign up is needed!  Here’s what’s asked of you:

Prior to church, when you arrive:

Put on a Greeter or Welcome button (they are hanging by both entries, the red front doors or double entry doors from the driveway) greet people as they enter, introduce yourself, help those who need directions

After the service:

Station yourself slightly behind Father Michael at the end of the aisle so he may “handoff” a newcomer to you. (Just let him know you are there!)  Please introduce yourself and offer to take newcomers down to coffee hour and introduce them to others.  Encourage them to fill out a pew card with their contact information so they receive our weekly Enews (these are found in the pews and on the table at the back of the church). Thank you for helping build a welcoming culture at St. Mary’s!

Coffee and Fellowship

We are always looking for more volunteers to take a turn hosting our fellowship hours. There is a paper sign-up sheet in the sunroom on the bulletin board. Hosting the fellowship hour after our worship services is a great gift to our community. As host or hostess you and a companion provide store-bought or home-made finger food goodies for all to enjoy after the 10:00 AM service. There is also a Fellowship Hour scheduled after the 8:00 AM service on the first Sunday of each month.

It's all with the help of our Sexton, who assists with set-up and clean-up. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the sunroom. Click here for more information.

Angels' Treasures

Angels' Treasures Thrift Shop has switched gears to embrace the Fall season and they have been busy sprucing up the displays. Please remember as Season's change, it is a great time to see what you might be able to donate to our fabulous little shop!

We are always looking for more helpers in the shop. Angels’ Treasurers is seeking volunteers for shop coverage, help with our social media presence and clutter patrol/sorting.

Please contact Janis Umschlag, Shop Manager at angelstreasures@stmarys-church.org.

St. Mary's Gardens

We are looking to grow our committees' ranks. We meet just twice a month in the growing season. Your commitment can be much less than those two days a month. Maybe you want to help us with watering one day a week, or a bit of weeding or watering? How about building a birdhouse for our wetland walkway? There are so many different ways you can help.

Join us for a Garden Work Day this Saturday morning, October 12 at 9:00 AM. Any questions? Contact our new Garden Committee Co-Chairs, Rebecca Freedman or Peter Wagenblass.

OUTREACH

Volunteer Opportunities Serving The Community Outside of St. Mary's Church

Faith Family Kitchen

This program provides nutritious meals to anyone who is hungry at the Faith Assembly of God at 154 Bearses Way in Hyannis. Our volunteers arrive on the fourth Monday of every month at 4:30 PM to help set up for take-out meals and dine-in dinners. Serving and clean-up generally take until 7:30 PM. Please contact Carolyn Thomas or Beth Hearn if you wish to volunteer with this program.

Miracle Kitchen

Once a month on Wednesday, St. Mary's has the privilege of creating healthy food and fabulous desserts to serve for lunch for 30 to 50 people at the Salvation Army on North Street in Hyannis. This Ministry needs cooks, bakers, delivery people, and servers. Please contact Sally Cameron if you would like be part of this team.

Habitat for Humanity

St. Mary's Parishioners have a long tradition of volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod (HFH-CC). HFH-CC partners with families in need of an affordable home to help them build one of their own; fostering stability, self-reliance and a strong sense of community. The elevated cost of housing and living on Cape Cod makes this a very needed ministry in our area. There are many different ways to volunteer with Habitat, and they do not all involve swinging a hammer. Some of our parishioners, make quilts, some provide snack and home baked treats for the workers, some help with administrative tasks in the office, some help with site landscaping. Click here to learn more about volunteering with Habitat or contact Beth Hearn.

Amazing Grace Camp

Did you know that Amazing Grace Camp offers programming for children and families affected by incarceration year-round? It takes a community to create and offer a camp experience and a year-round program. We need volunteers to work with children at the week of camp as well as at our monthly activities, and we also need volunteers to help us create programming, promote our work, and oversee administrative tasks. Click here for the Volunteer Application or contact Julie Lytle.

We have a public facebook page as well as, a private facebook group page which we use for more internal communications.
