Vol. 02 | Issue 27

July 6, 2024

Hello Kristina,

I hope that you had a wonderful and safe 4th of July holiday! I want to give a special shout-out of thanks to our Police and Fire departments including our Lifeguards for their ongoing focus on safety, especially during these busy summer holidays. Be sure to give them a hello and thank you when you see them!

This week, we have a great line-up of summer events. Join us on Tuesday, July 9, at Granada Beach for Moonlight Movies on the Beach for a showing of The Meg. On Thursday, July 11, the Long Beach Municipal Band will be at Recreation Park at 6:30 pm. That same evening, we have scheduled a free showing of Vindication Swim, written and directed by Elliott Hasler, at 7:15 pm at the Aquarium of the Pacific (100 Aquarium Way). Reservations are required and there are a limited number of tickets available.

The Arts Council for Long Beach is proud to administer the Creative Economy Grants program including a $135,000 allocation for the Public Mural Program. Vote on your favorite mural for Recreation Park before the voting period ends on Monday, July 8!

City Council will be dark on Tuesday, July 9, 23, and 30. The next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 16, and you can find the agenda later today on the City of Long Beach website.

As always, the District 3 team and I are here to help. You can reach us at District3@longbeach.gov or (562) 570-6300.

Sincerely,

Kristina Duggan

Council Update

Upcoming City Council Meeting Highlight

On Tuesday, July 9, the City Council will not meet. The next City Council meeting will be held on July 16.

Grants Pass v. Johnson Decision

The United States Supreme Court recently overturned the 9th Circuit Court’s decision in Grants Pass v. Johnson, allowing cities to enforce anti-camping ordinances without first offering people experiencing homelessness a valid alternative place to sleep. This decision removed the requirements set by Martin v. Boise.

Long Beach's current Homeless Encampment and Public Spaces Cleanup Protocol, released in response to the Ensuring Usable and Safe Public Spaces item I co-authored last year, has been developed to strike a balance between treating people with dignity and allowing the general public to enjoy public spaces. It has also evolved to avoid costly lawsuits due to the vague legal standards set by Grants Pass v. Johnson and Martin v. Boise.

Following this decision, I think Long Beach needs to review this protocol and make updates with input from residents. All voices should be heard in this discussion, including yours.

Summary of Previous City Council Meeting
