Council Update

Upcoming City Council Meeting Highlight

The City Council will not meet again until July 22.

With no City Council meeting this week, we wanted to update you on recent developments with oil production and refineries in California. Two major refineries have announced they will shut down in 2026, which together supply about 20% of the state’s fuel.

In response, on April 21, 2025, Governor Newsom sent a letter to the California Energy Commission (CEC) directing it to work with refineries to develop recommendations to help keep California’s transportation fuel supply safe, affordable, and reliable.

You can read the Governor’s letter here. The CEC’s Vice Chair Gunda replied with recommendations, which you can read here. Councilmember Duggan also signed a coalition letter urging the CEC to develop and support a responsible transition plan for Long Beach that protects workers, safeguards the environment, and prevents severe fiscal impacts to the City. You can read the letter here.

News & Resources

Cabi Headquarters Grand Opening

This week, I helped welcome Cabi clothing to Long Beach with the grand opening of their new headquarters, bringing 100 new jobs and a women-founded business to our city.

A couple of years ago, while campaigning, I knocked on a neighbor’s door in District 3 and had a great conversation. That neighbor, Russ, who had since joined Cabi as their CFO, reached out last year to share that they were looking for a new headquarters.

The City team and I got to work, helping them scout locations across Long Beach. I’m proud to say they chose our city. Welcome to your new home, Cabi!

Survey on Access and Participation in City Council Meetings

Apologies for the broken link in last week’s newsletter. It has been fixed.

We are seeking input from residents, community groups, and business owners on how to make City Council meetings more welcoming and accessible. Your feedback will help the Government Operations and Efficiency (GOE) Committee explore ways to boost participation and remove barriers to engagement. Let us know:

What can we do to make our City Council meetings more welcoming and accessible for everyone in the community to voice their opinions?

READY, SET, GOLD!

Last week, I attended the Ready, Set, Gold! event at the Belmont Pool and Beach, where teens met Olympians and Paralympians. They had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities and were surprised by Olympic kite surfer Daniela Moroz, who made a memorable entrance by surfing in. It was inspiring to see youth so energized and engaged.

Thanks, too, to Jamal Hill, Paralympic swimmer, and April Ross, Beach Volleyball Olympian, for your work with this great program. It was great to meet you out there!

Also noteworthy is the confirmation that Long Beach’s Belmont Shore will host four Olympic Sailing board events for the LA28 Games: Men’s and Women’s Windsurfing and Men’s and Women’s Kiteboarding.

Moonlight Movies on the Beach

Pack your blankets and beach chairs for Moonlight Movies on the Beach, with free screenings at Granada Beach on select Tuesdays. Movies start at sunset and run through August 12.

Pier Jump at Veterans Pier with the Junior Lifeguards

Thursday, I joined the Long Beach Fire Department Command Staff and Long Beach Lifeguards to do the Junior Lifeguard pier jump!

This year, 783 Junior Lifeguards jumped from the Belmont Pier. Congratulations and good job to all for a great test of skills!

National Night Out on August 5

This year's National Night Out is almost here and will take place on Tuesday, August 5, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. The Long Beach Police Department is hosting events in each patrol division. Join the East Division at Stearns Park for National Night Out. We encourage residents to attend, connect with neighbors, and engage with local officers. We hope to see you there!

District 3 Blood Drive with the American Red Cross

Thank you to everyone who came out to donate at this week’s blood drive. The American Red Cross collected 16 life-saving units of blood, and I am proud to be one of them!

Every unit collected represents hope for someone in need. My team and the Red Cross are so grateful to everyone who took time out of their day to roll up their sleeves and give the gift of life.

Special Invitation: Film Premiere of When Everyone Swims

When Everyone Swims is a powerful new film that explores how access to swim education can save lives and why water safety should be a right not a privilege.

Join the premiere on July 24 at 6:00 pm at the Honda Pacific Visions Theater, Aquarium of the Pacific.

Tickets are free, reserve yours now using the link below.

Sewer Smoke Testing: Naples Island

Long Beach Utilities Department (LBUD) is committed to keeping our sewer system well-maintained, safe, and operating efficiently. Starting Tuesday, July 22, 2025, LBUD and its contractor, Downstream Services, will conduct a sewer smoke test on Naples Island. The test helps identify areas where stormwater may be entering the sewer system, which can cause capacity issues during rainstorms and potentially lead to spills.

What is a Sewer Smoke Test?

No Jumping from Bridges – Let’s Keep Everyone Safe

Friendly and important reminder: Under Long Beach Municipal Code 16.04.020, diving or jumping from any bridge or pier is strictly prohibited unless you're a City employee performing official duties or participating in a City sanctioned training. Let’s work together to keep everyone safe this summer. Please talk to your kids and help spread the word.

Bushfire Kitchen, Now Open!

I am excited to welcome Bushfire Kitchen to our District 3 community! I hope you will stop by to check them out and support a new local business.
