On Tuesday, April 29, the City Council will not meet.
| | Summary of Previous City Council Meeting | | |
On Tuesday, April 22, the City Council heard the following items of interest:
Item #9: Request the City Manager to report back within 60 days with a plan for a coordinated, multi-departmental strategy to address human trafficking and improve public safety along Long Beach Boulevard in North Long Beach. The passage of SB 357 sought to decriminalize loitering for the purpose of prostitution, but it has also limited law enforcement's ability to address visible solicitation, even next to schools. This proposal asks the City to look at creating a plan, using the tools available, for a coordinated enforcement strategy, and survivor-centered and public health-focused response. This item was unanimously approved by City Council.
Item #10: Request the City Manager to evaluate options to expand the Long Beach Public Library's Libby services nationwide and report back in 90 days. This proposal responds to efforts in other parts of California and the U.S. to ban controversial literature. While Long Beach and California residents can already access the City’s digital library for free, this measure would open access to anyone in the country. Fundraising efforts are planned to help purchase additional digital copies in anticipation of increased demand. This item was unanimously approved by City Council.
All City Council, Committee, and Commission agendas can be found here.

Cambodian Genocide Remembrance Day 50th Anniversary | This past Tuesday, my staff and I attended the Cambodian Genocide Remembrance Day for the 50th Anniversary of this tragic historical event. The Cambodian community came together at Long Beach City Hall to reflect, heal, and celebrate their resilience and cultural heritage. It was a heartfelt and moving event where many shared their personal experiences and honored the memory of those who were lost. |

In 1999, an Italian court overturned a sexual assault case. They argued that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her assailant remove them, therefore making it a consensual act. In outrage and support of the victim, Italian women wore jeans to work and to the steps of the Italian Supreme Court to protest their unjust decision. The movement gained international attention, and every year since, Denim Day has been observed as a symbol of protest, raising awareness and standing up against sexual assault.
Join the City of Long Beach and District 3 as we show our support for Denim Day. We will be wearing our jeans to raise awareness and stand against sexual violence.
There is no excuse. No means no.

Safety Topic of the Week
Community Safety Programs
| |
Long Beach offers several programs that empower residents to help create a safer and more connected city.
In the Downtown area, Downtown Safety Ambassadors patrol by foot, bike, and Segway. These trained staff members are available to provide safety escorts for community members and visitors to cars, workplaces, parking structures, and more. While there are no known volunteer opportunities within the program, this is a great resource to share with family and friends visiting the Downtown area. A free and friendly safety escort is just a call away at (562) 244-1365.
The Community Watch program partners neighbors with the Long Beach Police Department to help prevent crime and build safer, more resilient communities. Community Watch encourages open communication and collaboration among residents and with the Police Department alike.
For those ready to step up during emergencies, the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program offers hands-on disaster response training. The core mission of CERT is simple yet powerful: to do the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
