Vol. 03 | Issue 2

January 11, 2025

Hello Kristina,

My heart goes out to everyone affected by the devastating fires across Los Angeles. It’s tragic to witness the loss of lives, homes, and entire communities. With over 100,000 people forced to evacuate, I encourage you to find ways to help. Below, I’ve included a few resources. If you know of others organizing relief efforts, please reply to this email and I’ll share their efforts with others.

I also want to take a moment to recognize and thank our First Responders, including the brave teams from the Long Beach Fire Department and Long Beach Police Department, who have been deployed to assist in various areas throughout the county. We are grateful for your work and courage!

I hope you can join us for the Grand Opening of the Bay Shore Library today at 9:30 AM at 195 Bay Shore Avenue. Lastly, please mark your calendars for the upcoming Community Budget meetings. This is your opportunity to help shape our city's future. Details below!

As always, the District 3 team and I are here to help. You can reach us at District3@longbeach.gov or (562) 570-6300.

Sincerely,

Kristina Duggan

Open Channel at Colorado Lagoon - Meeting with Lagoon Playgroup Regarding Claims of Asbestos

Last week, my office hosted a meeting with parents from Lagoon Playgroup to address concerns about the handling of asbestos during construction. You can view the full recording by clicking the link below.

Brief Summary

Asbestos is a naturally occurring material that was commonly used in building products for decades. It only becomes hazardous when fibers are released into the air. During the project, contractors identified small amounts of asbestos-containing materials in low concentrations on-site. All proper disposal protocols were followed, air monitors consistently confirmed no airborne asbestos, and licensed third-party abatement contractors oversaw the removal process. We were assured that the site remained safe for the public at all times.

The cost of abatement and associated delays are covered by the City, so the contractor had no incentive to underreport. The City can't comment on labor relations between the contractor and the former employees making these allegations.
