Vol. 02 | Issue 5

February 3, 2024

Hello Kristina,

On Thursday, a significant rainstorm occurred throughout the city. Starting tomorrow, a significantly larger storm with rain and wind is expected in our area. To prepare for the upcoming storm, please prepare today by getting sandbags and clearing debris from around storm drains. Use the following link to find a location for sandbags near you: Sandbag Link. Also, you can visit the Alert Long Beach website resources to learn how to mitigate loss or injury.

Our first Townhall was held on Wednesday, January 31, at the Recreation Park Community Center. Many people attended and shared their comments, questions, and concerns. The 3rd District team is dedicated to addressing all issues raised in the meeting and will provide an update of questions and answers in next week's newsletter.

Once the weather clears, plan to visit some of the amazing businesses located at 4th & Termino in Belmont Heights including Adelitas Revenge Gifts y Mas, Ambiance Skin Care & Day Spa, Flux Art Space, Sean Arthur Salon, Speak Cheezy, Twig and Willow, Vero Pilates, and Viento y Agua. These businesses, along with the District 3 office, the Long Beach Police Department, and Economic Development, held a roundtable to discuss crime prevention, security measures, and City resources that could help increase their business. A district-wide Business Roundtable hosted by our office will be scheduled in the upcoming months.

In this week's newsletter, you will also find information on the Colorado Lagoon project, Alamitos Bay Water Quality Enhancement, and other topics. If you're looking for fun indoor activities this weekend, check out the Long Beach Public Library website for podcasts suitable for everyone!

As always, the 3rd District team and I are here to help. Reach out to us at District3@longbeach.gov or (562) 570-6300.

Sincerely,

Kristina Duggan

Sewage Spill Affects Alamitos Bay and Colorado Lagoon

Flooding caused 47,000 gallons of sewage to be released closing all recreational swimming areas for water contact in Alamitos Bay and Colorado Lagoon. According to a report from the California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES), this was a result of infrastructure challenges experienced by the Los Angeles County Sanitation District.

Alamitos Bay and Colorado Lagoon are enjoyed by thousands of people every day and one of the reasons why I love Long Beach. We are preparing for the next storm, and I will provide updates as more information is available.

Coastal Tree Maintenance and Nesting Season

The City of Long Beach groups tree trimmings on the grid level. However, surveys and data may change the amount of trimmings at any one time to preserve nesting habitats.

In Southern California, bird nesting typically occurs between January and September. The regular tree trimming cycle will begin again on October 1. All non-emergency tree maintenance within the Coastal Zone may only occur between October 1 and December 31 to avoid disturbance to nesting habitats. The City of Long Beach cannot trim any trees during nesting season unless there is a safety issue. Although palm trees shed fronds and dates often, the City does not qualify this as a safety issue.
