Vol. 02 | Issue 38

September 21, 2024

Hello Kristina,

Join us this morning at 9:00 am for California Coastal Cleanup Day. This year's cleanup sites include Alamitos Bay Marina, Mother's Beach, the Peninsula, Belmont Pier, and Junipero Beach. Come participate to help make a positive impact on our local coastline.

Quake Heroes Earthquake Expo is next weekend! Are you quake ready? Join us on Saturday, September 28, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Recreation Park Community Center for movie screenings, earthquake simulators, and preparedness booths. Register here.

We have updates on both the Colorado Lagoon Open Channel project and the Studebaker Corridor Complete Street project. The Open Channel has reached a key milestone with tidal flow rerouted through the Eliot Street Bridge, and the Studebaker Corridor Complete Street project's final design documents are under review and construction is anticipated to begin in early 2025, pending Caltrans authorization.

As always, the District 3 team and I are here to help. You can reach us at District3@longbeach.gov or (562) 570-6300.

Sincerely,

Kristina Duggan

Council Update

Upcoming City Council Meeting Highlight

On Tuesday, September 24, the City Council will not meet. Councilmember Duggan called a Climate, Environment, and Coastal Protection Committee meeting at 3:00 pm on September 24. During this meeting, the following items of interest will be discussed:

Item #2: Recommend to receive and file a presentation on Long Beach Utilities' Lawn To Garden Program.

Item #3: Recommend to receive and file a presentation on the Terminal Island Freeway Transition Plan.

Summary of Previous City Council Meeting

On Tuesday, September 17, the City Council heard the following items of interest:

Item #20: Recommend approval of the ZoneIn: City Core plan, which will update the zoning along Anaheim Street to comply with the City's state approved Housing Element. Click here to see the interactive map with details about the updated zoning. Click here for more details. This item passed unanimously.

Item #24: Recommendation to request City Council approve a support position on Proposition 36. This item stemmed from the Report on Proposed Legislation Related to Retail Theft, Drug Use, and "Smash and Grab" Crimes

Councilmember Duggan made the initial motion for the City to take a support position on Prop 36. A first substitute motion was made for the City to take "no position" on the ballot measure. Councilmember Duggan then made a second substitute motion, which requires a vote be taken, asking the City Council to take a support position for Prop 36 and to send a letter to the Attorney General's Office to develop best practices for District Attorneys so the discretion to file felony charges is not abused. The second substitute motion failed 3 to 5 (Duggan, Supernaw, and Allen supported). The first substitute motion then passed 5 to 3, resulting in the City taking "no position" on Prop 36.

Studebaker Corridor Complete Street Project

The City has received final design documents for the Studebaker Corridor Complete Street project, which are currently under review. This project contains federal-aid funding which requires an Authorization from Caltrans for the City of Long Beach to administer this project. This Authorization is required prior to advertising and is pending Caltrans review. The project team anticipates receiving Authorization from Caltrans in the next couple months. If the bidding process is successful, the project award will follow and construction would be estimated to begin in early 2025.
