The Long Beach Marathon and Bike Event is this weekend! Please be advised that road closures will take place in District 3 this Sunday, October 6, from 5:00 am to 2:00 pm. Find details below.


Long Beach Transit Museum Express is back, offering convenient and fun rides to some of the City's iconic local arts and culture destinations for the whole family! Pick up locations include the Transit & Visitor Information Center at 130 East First Street and Willow Station at 2750 West American Avenue.


The Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk has started distributing Vote by Mail ballots to all registered voters, which can be dropped off at various locations throughout the City before the deadline of November 5, 2025 at 8:00 pm. See locations below.

Council Update

Upcoming City Council Meeting Highlight


On Tuesday, October 8, the City Council will hear the following items of interest:


Item #18: Recommendation to request Community Development Department and City Attorney prepare ordinance amending the Long Beach Municipal Code with enhancements to assure property owners comply with code enforcement citations and that vacant lots and vacant storefronts are kept secure until they are developed or rented; and

 

Request Community Development Department to report to Economic Development and Opportunity Committee regarding the effectiveness of programs and controls to ensure vacant lots and vacant storefronts are addressed to prevent blight; and

 

Request Intergovernmental Affairs Committee to consider adding language in the Legislative Agenda to advocate greater support for code enforcement staffing and enforcement tools within state law and regulations.

Summary of Previous City Council Meeting


On Tuesday, October 1, the City Council heard the following items of interest:


Item #27: Recommendation to refer to the Marine Advisory Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, and the Government Operations and Efficiency Committee for consideration of naming the new Junior Lifeguard Facility the Pat Flynn and Dick Miller Junior Lifeguard Facility (Authored by Councilmember Duggan). Pat Flynn and Dick Miller established the Long Beach Junior Lifeguard Program in 1971 with just 63 participants and grew it to be a premiere junior lifeguard program in Southern California. Last year, the City opened the new Junior Lifeguard facility and Councilmember Duggan submitted this item to kick off the process to name the new facility in their honor. This item passed unanimously.

Quake Heroes Earthquake Expo

The Quake Heroes Earthquake Expo was a great event! I was glad to see so many residents come out to learn more about earthquake preparedness and ensure our community is ready for the next big quake. Thank you to LBPD, LBFD, Disaster Preparedness team, and over 20 vendors for making this event possible.

City of Long Beach Debuts New Water Debris-Collecting Device

Youth Invited to Participate in Naming and Design Contest Through October 25

The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) has announced its new Jellyfishbot, a remotely controlled debris-collecting device that can remove up to 100 pounds of debris from surface-level water in a single mission. The Jellyfishbot will enhance City efforts to clean Long Beach marina waters and raise awareness on larger marine pollution issues.


To celebrate the debut of the Jellyfishbot, the PRM Adopt a Beach Program, in partnership with the Aquarium of the Pacific and with support from sponsors Long Beach Container Terminal and Intex Recreation Corporation, has launched a youth art and naming contest for the robot. Youth interested in participating can submit their ideas now through Friday, October 25.

Jellyfish Art Application

Long Beach Marathon 2024

On Sunday, October 6, the marathon and bike event will begin at 6:00 am, starting in Downtown Long Beach and ending on Ocean Boulevard. The half marathon starts at 7:00 am. Road closures will be in place from 5:00 am to 2:00 pm. Impacted roads include, but are not limited to, East Livingston Drive, Park Avenue, East Anaheim Street, Clark Avenue, East Atherton Street, Shoreline Drive, Queensway Bridge, and Queensway Drive.

Friends of Belmont Shore Meeting

It was great to attend the Friends of Belmont Shore meeting alongside Assemblymember Josh Lowenthal. During the meeting, I shared updates on our District 3 Capital Improvement Projects including Colorado Lagoon Open Channel and Studebaker Corridor Complete Street project.

Aquatic Capital of America Check Presentation to Fairfield YMCA

It was great attending Aquatic Capital of America's $7,000 check presentation for the Fairfield YMCA. This donation is part of ACOA's Waterproof Our Youth program, which has provided swim lessons to over 700 children since 2018 and will help an additional 300 learn to swim in 2024.
