Upcoming City Council Meeting Highlight
On Tuesday, October 8, the City Council will hear the following items of interest:
Item #18: Recommendation to request Community Development Department and City Attorney prepare ordinance amending the Long Beach Municipal Code with enhancements to assure property owners comply with code enforcement citations and that vacant lots and vacant storefronts are kept secure until they are developed or rented; and
Request Community Development Department to report to Economic Development and Opportunity Committee regarding the effectiveness of programs and controls to ensure vacant lots and vacant storefronts are addressed to prevent blight; and
Request Intergovernmental Affairs Committee to consider adding language in the Legislative Agenda to advocate greater support for code enforcement staffing and enforcement tools within state law and regulations.

Summary of Previous City Council Meeting
On Tuesday, October 1, the City Council heard the following items of interest:
Item #27: Recommendation to refer to the Marine Advisory Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, and the Government Operations and Efficiency Committee for consideration of naming the new Junior Lifeguard Facility the Pat Flynn and Dick Miller Junior Lifeguard Facility (Authored by Councilmember Duggan). Pat Flynn and Dick Miller established the Long Beach Junior Lifeguard Program in 1971 with just 63 participants and grew it to be a premiere junior lifeguard program in Southern California. Last year, the City opened the new Junior Lifeguard facility and Councilmember Duggan submitted this item to kick off the process to name the new facility in their honor. This item passed unanimously.
