Hello Kristina,
I am excited that summer is almost here with so many activities celebrating and supporting our community! We have Justin Rudd's 30-minute Beach Clean Up, the 3rd Saturday Wetland Warrior Cleanup at Jack Dunster Reserve, a Go Long Beach Day by the Belmont Shore Business Association, a Pride Weekend Clean-Up at Mother's Beach, and the 2024 Lowell Carnival!
It is also Pride weekend in Long Beach! There are many events related to Pride weekend today, and tomorrow is the famous Pride Parade. I will be attending multiple events throughout the weekend and hope to see you at one of them!
For our small business owners, the Level Up Long Beach program application deadline has been extended to May 21 at 5:00 pm. This program will put 25 entrepreneurs with physical locations through a series of comprehensive workshops, connects them with support resources, and provides a $10,000 grant upon completion. Apply here.
As always, the District 3 team and I are here to help. You can reach us at District3@longbeach.gov or (562) 570-6300.

On Tuesday, May 14, the City Council will hear the following items of interest:

19th Annual American Red Cross Hometown Heroes Luncheon
I was honored to attend the 19th Annual American Red Cross Hometown Heroes Luncheon. Each year, the American Red Cross celebrates extraordinary acts by ordinary people. These heroes save lives and exemplify the Red Cross mission!
This year, we celebrated Dr. Ryan Chiu, a Hero from Long Beach who assisted a Long Beach runner who suffered severe cardiac arrest near the Long Beach Art Museum. Dr. Chiu saw what was happening and jumped into action. Our Hometown Hero is a cardiac surgeon at Long Beach Memorial who helped to save a life.
We were also honored to celebrate former LBPD Officer Jorge Grajeda, who helped save the life of a drowning child. His quick action and continuous CPR application while waiting for medical help, saved a young boys life.
The American Red Cross recognized many ordinary people for extra-ordinary acts.

Bay Shore Library Project | The Bay Shore Library project is moving along! Since the window work was completed in January, the Public Works team has redesigned the ADA ramp, and permits for construction have been issued. The redesign allowed for an ADA ramp at the Bay Shore entrance, while preserving the outdoor space and mid-century modern design of the library loved by so many. Construction has started on the Bay Shore entrance with the expected completion in the Fall.
CSULB School of Social Work | I was honored to address the graduating class of the CSULB School of Social Work at an amazing event which showcased student projects and theses. Their project focus included supporting people experiencing homelessness and supporting parent / child involvement. Congratulations to the 231 graduating students who are part of the future of our public health.

I was honored to attend the first-of-its-kind workshop in our community to understand the challenges our LGBTQ+ older adults face and local progress. This was a collaboration with Grace on 3rd United Methodist Church, CSULB, Los Angeles LGBT Center Senior Services, LGBTQ Center, and BWMTSC, and the event was a success!
Open Channel at Colorado Lagoon | Public Works is planning a community meeting in June to provide the latest updates on the construction. Please stay tuned for the date and time of this meeting. In the meantime, please check out the project website that answers frequently asked questions.

On Wednesday, my staff and I toured Rancho Los Alamitos. During our visit, we walked through the 19th Century ranch house, saw the rose garden as well as the succulent garden, and met the barnyard animals including the ducks, chickens, and horses. The Rancho is a hidden gem that everyone should visit for a relaxing respite as well as to learn about some of the history of Long Beach. Thank you to staff who were welcoming and informative.
Hours of operation are Wednesday through Sunday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
