Council Update

Upcoming City Council Meeting Highlight

On Tuesday, October 22, the City Council will hear the following items of interest:

Parklet Permit for Panama Joes

This week, representatives from Panama Joe's and I met to discuss their application and feedback received from residents. I expressed concerns about their parklet application, and we agreed that it was not in the best interest of the community to move forward. Panama Joe's has withdrawn their application from consideration.

Thank you to those who provided input. I also appreciate Panama Joe's for working with us to hear the community's voice in this process and for their ongoing efforts to be a good neighbor.

Item #19: Recommendation to request Police Department to provide a presentation to City Council in 60 days on the protocols and guidelines the Department employs when responding to cases of trespassing and occupying abandoned properties (“squatting”); and

Request Police Department to work with City Manager, City Attorney, and City Prosecutor to evaluate current legislation and associated impacts on the Department’s capabilities when addressing incidents of “squatting” and trespassing, and report back to City Council with recommendations in 90 days.

Summary of Previous City Council Meeting

On Tuesday, October 15, the City Council heard the following items of interest:

Item #16: Recommendation to receive and file a presentation from the City Manager, Financial Management, and the Health and Human Services Departments providing an update on the implementation of the City’s Sidewalk Vending OrdinanceSee the presentation here. This item passed unanimously.

Councilmember Duggan asked City Staff to focus enforcement efforts on "pop-up restaurants" that are neglecting to follow the health code and laws, as compared to the sidewalk vending businesses that are making a good faith effort to be compliant. Councilmember Duggan also asked City Staff for a plan to start outreach and enforcement on weekends and after-hours when sidewalk vending businesses are typically operating in District 3.

The event highlighted the memorial's significance and our community's connection to our naval heritage. Thank you to Partners of Parks for this great celebration!

As a note, former 3rd District Councilmember Frank Colonna, pictured top right, led the effort to install the Lone Sailor Memorial!

Project Jellyfish Youth Art and Naming Contest

Applications Close Friday, October 25

The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) has announced its new Jellyfishbot, a remotely controlled debris-collecting device that can remove up to 100 pounds of debris from surface-level water in a single mission. The Jellyfishbot will enhance City efforts to clean Long Beach marina waters and raise awareness on larger marine pollution issues.

To celebrate the debut of the Jellyfishbot, the PRM Adopt a Beach Program, in partnership with the Aquarium of the Pacific and with support from sponsors Long Beach Container Terminal and Intex Recreation Corporation, has launched a youth art and naming contest for the robot. Youth interested in participating can submit their ideas now through Friday, October 25.
