Upcoming City Council Meeting Highlight
On Tuesday, May 7th, the City Council will hear the following items of interest:
Item #17: Recommendation to request City Manager to explore and report back with recommendations on the following immediate and longer-term actions to speed up the development of new affordable housing, increase the supply of affordable units, increase incentives for the development of both ownership and affordable rental housing, support the preservation of existing affordable units, and empower the Community Development Department to improve the affordable housing environment in the City of Long Beach:
- Continue Housing Development Acceleration Strategies from the January 10, 2023 Emergency Declaration;
- Implement Inclusionary Zoning Citywide;
- Pursue a Youth Right to Housing Through the Long Beach Housing Promise;
- Increase Homeownership Supports for Long Beach Residents; and
- Explore Innovative Solutions for Inclusive and Sustainable Housing.
Item #18: Recommendation to request City Manager to work with the Parks, Recreation and Marine Department on the feasibility of potential new sites for new skate parks in the City of Long Beach.
Item #19: Recommendation to request City Attorney to draft resolution supporting the Freedom to Marry Ballot Measure. This ballot measure, appearing on the November Ballot, will repeal Prop 8 and amend the definition of marriage in the California Constitution which states: Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California. The Dobbs v. Jackson decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade, threatens the precedent used to also decide Obergefell v. Hodges, which established the right to same sex marriage. This precedent is often referred to as our "right to privacy". This measure is being proposed to ensure the California Constitution recognizes same-sex marriage, even if Obergefell v. Hodges were to be overturned.
Item #20: Recommendation to request Mayor to convene Charter Amendment Committee of the City Council to discuss placing an amendment of City Charter Article XI (Civil Service Department) before the voters to combine Civil Service and Human Resources Departments into one unified hiring department to manage all employee recruitment, hiring, and classified employee certifications; and establish an independent Civil Service Employee Rights and Appeals Commission to resolve complaints regarding Civil Service rules, to adjudicate classified employee disciplinary appeal; and to implement classified hiring preferences for Long Beach residents, students from local colleges and universities, current employees, and certain internships/apprenticeships. (Citywide)

Official City of Long Beach Statement Regarding Public Health Emergency in Response to Local Tuberculosis Outbreak; Risk to Population at Large Remains Low
May 2, 2024, City Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis declared a local public health emergency to strengthen the City’s preparedness and ability to respond to a localized tuberculosis (TB) outbreak. This declaration will be considered for ratification by the Long Beach City Council on Tuesday, May 7.
The outbreak is currently isolated to a distinct population and the risk to the general public is low. The population at risk in this outbreak has significant barriers to care including homelessness and housing insecurity, mental illness, substance use and serious medical comorbidities.

Circuit - Your Local Electric Shuttle | At Circuit, the drivers are miles ahead! Unlike other ridesharing apps, they hire locally employee drivers instead of contractors. There are many safety and service benefits to having staffed drivers, but at the end of the day, riders love seeing friendly, familiar faces in the Circuit cars. Download the Circuit app and get around town.
Justin Rudd, Chief Wally Hebeish, and Councilmember Duggan. | Kim Vuong and Councilmember Duggan at the S.A.F.E vehicle.
Thank you, Justin Rudd and the Community Action Team, for organizing a fantastic event! Over 90 different vehicles, trucks, and cars were on display, and I was especially impressed with the Sensory Area For Everyone (S.A.F.E.) vehicle at the Touch-A-Truck event brought by the Health and Human Services Department.
My favorite part was watching kids’ unrestrained excitement about getting in one of the fire trucks, police cars, or public works vehicles (yes, the dump truck!). I am already looking forward to next year's event.
| Thank you Touch-a-Truck and Justin Rudd for Partnering with CSULB's Laurén Chalmers '83 Beach Pantry | Christina from Laurén Chalmers '83 Beach Pantry organized a donation drive that collected 1,550 food items weighing 1,100 pounds! These generous donations will provide meals for CSULB students in need. We appreciate all the attendees who participated in the food drive. Please consider making a donation. | | | |
Recycle Your Bicycle Today | Today, recycle your bicycle from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Recreation Park at 736 Park Avenue. The event is located near the intersection of 7th Street and Park Avenue, in the green space by the Bandshell, which can be accessed by taking 7th Street to Federation Drive. Look for blue signs.
3rd District Business Roundtable | This valuable meeting provided insights on safety tips for businesses and the City Prosecutor's role in crime and safety. If an incident has occurred, we recommend that you file a report. The reports provide a record and are evidence for the City Prosecutor in court. There are three ways to file a police report: phone, online, or in person. Thank you for joining the discussion!
Sea Scouts Centennial Celebration | Congratulations to the Long Beach Sea Scouts on their Centennial Celebration! Over the weekend, we celebrated their 100 years of sea scouting and community service. The mission of the Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
Los Cerritos Wetlands
Nature Walk Event
| We were so glad to host a wetlands nature walk! Community members explored and learned about the Los Cerritos Wetlands. Tidal Influence led guided tours that showcased the diverse native plants and birds. Attendees engaged in activities like coloring guides and word searches, fostering a deeper connection with the wetlands' ecosystem. It was fun and educational as families and friends immersed themselves in nature's wonders. | | | |
The City of Long Beach's Technology and Innovation Department (TID) wants to hear from you!
Children's Day & Earth Day Celebrations
Congratulations to the Children's Day and Earth Day event on their 27th year of celebrations! This event was initiated by Summer Hansen decades ago, and we are happy to have it revived and coordinated by her son, Jim.
At the Children’s Day event, which was located near the Rec Park Bandshell, there were cultural performances and informational booths. Long Beach Recycles offered insights into vermi-composting and maintaining the cleanliness and dryness of recycled items.
I discovered that plastic bags cannot be recycled in our city bins. It is important to take plastic bags to special recycling centers, usually located at the entrance to grocery stores, to avoid jamming the recycling machines.

59th Annual Congressional Cup | Over the weekend, world-class skippers raced in Long Beach waterways at the Belmont Veterans Pier in match races, providing an optimal view of coastline sailing. An amazing venue for LA28!
The Belmont Shore Business Association held a mixer at Wine Beach, a great opportunity for members to connect and socialize. It was a great evening filled with delicious food and wine. Thanks to everyone who joined us!
