This Week's Activities: August 28 - September 3
Dear Friends
Remember what it used to be like getting ready to go back to school—buying supplies, getting organized? Now is a great time to think of your fitness routine as starting over and going back to school. Every move counts toward helping manage your PD symptoms. Get back on track with our in person or online classes.

Lots of great educational opportunities coming up too. Details are below in our email, along with some helpful articles.

Take care!
Linda and Keith

NEXT WEEK: Annual Picnic on September 9th
We will have our annual picnic at Lynch Park in Beverly on Saturday September 9th. Thanks to Gary and Helen Bert, they submitted an application to reserve time at the Park so we can meet there from 11am-2:30pm. They plan to bring drinks, snacks and some games everyone can play. Please plan on bringing your lunch and/or some snacks to share if you wish. There won't be a formal agenda, just a time for us to connect in-person. And this will take the place of our regularly scheduled support group meeting in September. For planning purposes, please RSVP to [email protected] and [email protected].

Parkinson’s Medications May Impair Body’s Ability to Keep Cool: Study
Medications commonly used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease may affect the body’s ability to control its core temperature, part of the body’s so-called automatic functions, which include sweating, a review study found. Such agents — which include anticholinergic medications and cholinesterase inhibitors, dopamine replacement therapies, and dopamine agonists — may impair the body’s ability to keep cool, which can pose a potential threat to people with Parkinson’s, according to researchers. Webinar Series: Thursday, September 14th at 2:30pm: Occupational Therapy 101 for Parkinson's
APDA has announced a brand new program called Thriving Through Occupational Therapy. Throughout this three-part web series, we will explore the world of occupational therapy (OT) and the many ways it can benefit people living with PD. Each episode will focus on different aspects of OT and offer helpful advice on how to use OT to help maximize quality of life throughout the PD journey. Click to Register.
Are Melatonin, Sleep, and Neurologic Disorders Connected?
Yes, there are strong links among low melatonin levels, poor sleep, and worse neurologic symptoms, according to research. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain. Darkness prompts the pineal gland to start producing and secreting melatonin into the bloodstream, while light causes it to stop. That's how melatonin synchronizes the sleep-wake cycle with night and day. Studies in the last few years have indicated that lower melatonin levels may increase seizures in patients with epilepsy and affect cognition in people with Alzheimer's disease. They also may worsen symptoms related to stroke, migraine, autism, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and attention deficit–hyperactivity disorder.
Connecting Through Art Workshop via Zoom: Thursday, September 21st from 3 to 4 PM
Connecting Through Art is a creative arts program that offers people with Parkinson’s the space and ability to express feelings, emotions, and daily concerns through art. It is open to any adult who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and their care partners. Katrina Casey, Art Therapist, will guide participants through a short mindfulness exercise, a modeling clay activity, and a watercolor session. The program is free, and art supplies will be provided at no cost to participants. Registration is required. For questions, please email Anushka Shiell at [email protected]. Click to Register.
