Gabriel Visits Zechariah

Visitations: An Advent Series
Over 2,000 years ago the people of Israel were weary of waiting for their Savior. Most were caught off guard when he was born in a stable. Like them, we often give up on our prayers, believing nothing is going to happen. Just when we aren’t looking for God, he often shows up and intervenes when we least expect it. In this series, Pastor Kellen will share stories of people who experienced unexpected visitations in the Christmas story.

Spiritual Wellness in a Stressful Season
Pastor Steve Kellough
Sundays, December 1, 8, 15 & 22
9:45-10:45 a.m. in Stewart Hall

As beautiful and awe-inspiring as the Christmas season is in our memories and anticipation, it’s also a time of anxious thoughts and frayed nerves. How do we handle the pressures and expectations surrounding this “most wonderful time of the year”? In this 4-part Adult Ed class for Advent, we will be studying biblical passages giving practical guidance for spiritual wellness. Lots of planning is given to the preparation of food for our bodies during the holidays – how about giving attention to food for our souls? In this class, we’ll be considering the themes of prayer, contentment, Sabbath, and community. Bring your spiritual appetite and prepare to dig in!
Giving Tuesday
For the first time, First Pres is participating in Giving Tuesday on December 3 to support our church’s mission and ministry. A global day of giving that follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday invites us to shift our focus to the central reason for Christmas, the birth of Jesus. We ask that you prayerfully consider a gift to our church that is above and beyond your normal offering or pledge. To participate, you can give online or at the church office.
Christmas Sharing - Mark your calendar
Christmas Sharing is Coming December 13 & 14

Help us celebrate the 50th anniversary of Christmas Sharing, with your donations of food, clothes, coats and love. Most needed items are: clothes, toys and coats. Food boxes can be picked up in the Rotunda.

It takes many hands to collect, sort, and organize donations and then help guests shop for their needs and get them to their homes. There are opportunities to volunteer each day from December 10-14.
Click here for more details. Sign up to volunteer here .

Older Adults Christmas Luncheon
Bathe the Seniors From Outreach Community
Center With Love and Include a Hug From Above

Each year First Pres partners with Outreach Community Center and Gary Methodist Church to host a Christmas luncheon for Outreach’s Older Adults Program. First Pres provides many volunteers to make this day possible. For many of these seniors, this annual event is the highlight of their holiday season, and for some, their only celebration.

Guests will enjoy a traditional holiday dinner with all the trimmings and holiday musical presentation by
students from Franklin Middle School. They will also each receive a set of new bath towels as a gift.

A $12 donation provides one older adult a place at the annual Christmas Luncheon at First Pres on Friday, December 20. Donation envelopes are on the Welcome Desk in the Rotunda. Please contact the church office with any questions.

It’s almost finals time for our 85+ First Pres college students and we’d love to send them a little bit of love and joy amid all the stress that finals can bring. If you would like to donate money or $5 gift cards (please, only $5 cards) to places like Starbucks, Target, Wal-Mart, or fast food, please drop your donations in the office by Sunday, December 1. The Grandchildren’s Christmas Story
By Kathy Young
December 6 – January 31 on the Link

Artist’s Reception: Sunday, December 8 9:45-10:45 a.m.

Kathy Young’s first two grandchildren were born in 1998, and the first Christmas drawing was born as well. The drawings became a tradition, and Kathy chose a different theme each year for the Christmas pieces. As her grandchildren have grown into young adults, the tradition of creating these beautiful pen and ink drawings has continued. They will be on display at First Pres for all to enjoy.
