GOT A LABOR ARTS EVENT? EMAIL US AT info@laborheritage.org

EDITOR’S NOTE: Two theater events, one book talk, two films, one concert and one radio show; that’s just this week’s line-up of labor arts across the country, from New York City to Long Beach, California and points in-between. Recently someone asked me how we know about all these events and that’s mostly down to you, our readers, who have been sending in tips from near and far. The breadth and depth of labor culture in the U.S. these days is astonishing and inspiring; help spread the word and keep sending those tips in!

It was the first show I put on and there were some hiccups along the way and I learned a lot, but overall it was just a really great experience and I can’t thank you enough.”

NoVa Labor Book Club: James: A Novel (Book)

Tuesday September 24 at 7:30 pm (Online)

James: A Novel, by Percival Everett; retelling of Mark Twain's original Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In James, Jim has narrative authority and tells his story from his first person perspective and in his own words.

Trabis: The Body and its Worth (Theater)

Wednesday, September 25, 5:00 PM; Friday, September 27, 2024, 5:00 PM; Sunday, September 29, 2024, 8:00 PM; Icebox Project Space Gallery Located within Crane Arts Icebox Project Space Gallery, 1400 N American St, Philadelphia, PA 19122

Most are getting sick of selling ourselves to businesses, causes, and institutions that pay the price tag of this society instead of cultivating what we truly find valuable in our culture. “Trabis: The Body and its Worth” finds that open vein of discontent and peels back the skin of the enclosures that separate our culture from our work. With the creative force of Mariel Romero Mendez and musical composition by B.E. Farrow, Trabis takes on the industries we sell ourselves to for one reason or another, clangs against the bars they surround us with, and asks if you want to acknowledge the bars around you.

Between Two Worlds (Film)

Rochester, NY 14607

Based partly on French journalist Florence Aubenas’ best-selling 2011 non-fiction book, The Night Cleaner, a writer, Marianne, goes undercover as a ferryboat cabin cleaner to personalize and expose the brutality and indignities of the global financial crisis on the unemployed and low-wage workers whose survival relies on finding temporary hours in the absence of steady work. But, unlike Aubenas, Marianne hides her real identity from her co-workers. Is she aware of the risks of her deception?

The Farmer-Labor Movement: A Minnesota Story (Film)

Saturday, September 21, 2024, 5:00 PM; St. Mark AME Church, Farm-Labor Education, 530 N 5th Ave E., Duluth, MN 55805

From the early 1920s to its merger with the Democrats in 1944 to create the modern DFL, Farmer Laborites united urban and rural Minnesotans in a powerful movement for social justice. The issues they fought for remain as relevant today as they were back in the 1930s.

Joe Uehlein: Songs of Work, Hope and Freedom (Music)

Saturday, September 28, 2024, 4:30 PM; 775 Stanley Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90804

Joe Uehlein's labor-themed concerts always include a wide and deep presentation of Americana and roots-rock music, including folk, rock’n roll, bluegrass, country, soul, and more. His solo shows take on a more intimate feel, talking more about music, politics, and the human spirit.
