STILL ON HOLD, READY TO PRESS PLAY
"Safe Start" Plan: Phase 3

Like so many of you, we've been dancing our fingers back and forth between the hold button and the play button; with some twiddling of the thumbs in between sets from the governor.

At last announcement, Edgeworks (along with all other indoor gyms) was placed in Phase 3 of the "Safe Start" re-opening plan for Washington state. With each phase estimated to last 3 weeks, the current best case scenario has us looking toward a mid-late June reopening with a 50 person capacity limit.

We're continuing to review all of our options that will help us manage and maximize member access to the gym. Most likely this will involve an online reservation system allowing you the opportunity to reserve your 2-hour climbing session prior to showing up at the gym. Not only will this help us manage capacity limits and cleaning between sessions, but it will also allow up to 300+ check-ins every day. A new “check-out” process will also be introduced to further help track the number of people in the gym and let you know when check-ins are available.

In the first 2-3 weeks of reopening, we plan to be strategic in our offerings, prioritizing member access to in-gym climbing. With that, climbing school courses and youth programs may be offered at limited capacity. Summer camps will likely move to outdoor locations and group fitness classes could remain online until we feel it's safe to reintroduce them in the gym. Times and schedules of courses, programs and classes are also likely to be adjusted.

We are also working hard to create a plan that minimizes risk for both our members and our staff. We will be doing our best to accommodate both the desire to climb, as well as the need to reduce contact and exposure; more details to follow in the coming weeks.

We share this information with you knowing that we're chasing a moving target and these plans may very well change between now and then. Please stay connected and feel free to reach out to us with ideas, updates, concerns and/or considerations. #wegotthistacoma

ROUTE SETTER BETA: Am I doing this right?
by: Joe Stangel

It’s a word you will hear all the time when you’re hanging out with climbers – beta .

Beta is a shorthand way to reference the sequence of movements that someone used to climb their way through a route or problem. It can apply to an entire climb or even a single, specific move. What  is  beta? What’s  the  beta? What’s  your  beta? There is often a big difference between those questions.

Our objective as route setters is to make sure that the intended beta is appropriate for the grade and to be the easiest way to complete the climb. But, it may not be the simplest or most obvious way. For newer climbers this is where the beta is often ‘broken’.

ACCESS FUND
A Guide to Climbing During the Coronavirus Pandemic

We all must do our part to protect public health and prevent the further spread of COVID-19. All indications are that we are in this for the long haul. While we're still safer at home, the Access Fund has pulled together some tips to follow if you do plan to go out and climb. And while you're getting that gear dusted off, check out and sign The Climber's Pact. More than ever, it's the way to show up as we navigate this pandemic.

Remember to chill out, minimize everything, be prepared and lead by example. The decisions we make today will benefit climbers for years to come. #wegotthis 😎
