WE NEED YOUR HELP THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday, June 15, is Central Congregation’s turn to host our Breakfast Ministry—and we are in great need of volunteers to make it happen!

We’ve been serving over 100 guests each week, and we can’t do it without you and your support. We need donations of fruit, bread items, and hard-boiled eggs, and we would be so grateful if you could join us to help serve.

This ministry is a meaningful way to care for our community, and it’s always a joyful, energizing start to the day. Plus, you’ll be finished in plenty of time to make it to Sunday School.

Your presence and generosity truly matter. We hope to see you there!

Did you know that the PC(USA) has appointed a committee to write a new confession of faith to be considered for addition to our Book of Confessions? Our own Rev. Dr. Martha Moore-Keish is one of the two members of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta who is on the writing committee. The Presbytery has an event, Conversation with the Clerk, where you can learn more about this new confession, the process and offer input on via Zoom on Tuesday July 29, at 7pm.

The Rebekah Circle Luncheon

The Rebekah Circle enjoyed their annual spring luncheon at the Austell Presbyterian Church on June 9, with 21 attending. Outgoing Chair, Frances St John, welcomed the new officers who will serve for the next two years. They are Mary Lillian Walker, Chair; Lynne Rea, Secretary; Debbie Miller, Treasurer. Please email Mary Lillian (marylillian1031@gmail.com) should you be interested in joining in September.

Central will have a group attend the "No Kings" protest on Saturday, June 14, in Liberty Plaza from 10 a.m. to noon. For those of you who took part in the “Hands Off” protest in April, this protest will be a bit different since there will not be a march beforehand. Central’s parking garage will not be open, but the courtyard will be open, and Susan Landrum will be there.

If you would like to meet beforehand, please email Rachel Szymanski at rachael.szymanski@woodward.edu by Friday. We’ll gather outside the Georgia State MARTA station at 9:45 a.m. and walk over to Liberty Plaza together.

This “Call to Action” is from Emmalee Hackshaw:

As you may be aware, these are turbulent times for public broadcasting. We at Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) are feeling the stress of this uncertainty firsthand, and I’m writing to ask for your help.

The White House has formally asked Congress to rescind federal funding that had already been appropriated for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). This effort would zero out any funds that have already been approved by Congress to fund CPB for the next two years, approximately $1.1 billion. Congress has 45 days to approve this request. If Congress does not approve the rescission request, the funds will be allocated to the CPB as originally intended. This matters because the CPB funds are then passed on to local public media stations – GPB included.

GPB receives 12% of our annual funding from the CPB. This is not insignificant and would be extremely difficult to make up from other sources, if at all. The funding we receive from CPB funds local and national programming, news coverage from communities across Georgia, and educational programming from PBS KIDS. CPB funds directly support the important early childhood education work that we do with families and caregivers in Georgia communities.

Loss of federal funding would significantly hinder our work and the breadth of community service that we are able to provide.

I am asking for your help. Please take a moment to call your congressional representatives and urge them to oppose efforts to rescind federal funding for public media. It’s very easy to do this online here, where you can be connected directly to your representatives' offices and read from a provided script. You can call them every dayand it will help buoy the message!

You can read more about how federal funding for public media works and the implications for GPB on our website here. If you feel compelled, please share on social media.

Thank you for your help advocating for and protecting this thing that is so important and meaningful to me. Together, our voices will make a difference!

Our Summer Series Continues with Doug Ammar

Thank you for attending last week's opening session with Dr. Liz Bounds. We are looking forward to welcoming Doug Ammar from the Georgia Justice Project this Sunday. Doug has served the Georgia Justice Project since 1986 and has been in his current role as Executive Director since 1995. In that time, he has increased the reach of GJP from a small staff to a team of over 40 people committed to the mission, as well as growing the budget from $200,000 to over $4 million annually. Doug has been a key community leader for criminal justice by developing and expanding a nationally recognized holistic defense model at GJP and advocating for and helping draft 24 changes to Georgia state law since 2009. For his full bio, please click here

We look forward to being with Doug on Sunday, June 15th at 9:45 a.m. in the OAC atrium as he talks about the complications of and possibilities to support the re-entry of our formerly incarcerated neighbors.

Humanitarian Response in Israel/Palestine

We have witnessed the millions of people caught in the middle of the devastating conflict between the government of Israel and Hamas. This humanitarian crisis is dire, and the loss of human life is unimaginable. Through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA), the Presbyterian Church (USA) is providing assistance to those most vulnerable and supporting partners in Palestine and Israel who are responding to the needs of their neighbors. Our biggest concern is the safety and care for those caught in the middle of this conflict and in need of humanitarian aid, no matter their religious beliefs, politics, or nationality.
