Rec Center Receives New Scoreboard

By Wendy Smith, Youth Center Manager

A big shout out to Forest County Potawatomi Community's Executive Council for donating a new scoreboard to the Mole Lake Rec Center! We very much appreciate this!!

The plan is to replace the one in the gym and have the old one placed at the baseball field.

Thank you to Leelyn and Norb for picking it up, and to Jeff and Chad for helping haul it in the gym.

Elder and Youth Field Trip to Chicago

By Carla A. Storm, Elder Services Director

On August 29th and 30th, SCC Elders and Youth took a bus trip to Chicago to watch a Brewers game and take in other sites. After some last minute funding complications and roster changes, we were finally on our way at 6:30 am. The first leg of our trip was to Green Bay for breakfast. The ride there was quiet as we were all still sleepy.

Once we got back on the road, Debbie Wendorf, ADRC of the Northwoods, had scavenger hunt games for the kids and adults to play along our journey to the Windy City. We had a mix of Brewers and Cubs fans so there was a little bantering back and forth on the bus.

We arrived at Shedd Aquarium in time to have lunch along the shores of Lake Michigan. When lunch was finished, we went with our groups to walk around the aquarium. A few of the Elders even got a special ride to the aquarium. Some groups arrived in time to watch the Beluga Whale show. Others were able to touch a Stingray, starfish and sea anemones!

The day went by quickly and we made our way to Navy Pier to check things out and have some pizza. The pizza was amazing and all the workers were so nice and accommodating to our large group.

There were so many things to see at Navy Pier and not enough time to see it all. Some of the children were able to ride on the Ferris wheel, drop tower, teacups and carousel.

A few chaperones and Elders stayed later and enjoyed a night cruise to see the skyline. After having to walk a little bit to get on our bus, we were all ready to get to our hotel rooms.

Everyone woke up refreshed and excited for the Brewers-Cubs game. After a nice continental breakfast, t-shirts and caps were handed out to our group and we headed to Wrigley Field, the second oldest ballpark in the United States, which was built in 1914. It was cloudy and, you guessed it, windy, in the Windy City but that did not stop us from enjoying the game. Even though the Brewers could not bring a “W” home, it was still a great experience for all. You could say it was a dream come true for some of our Cubs fans.

We would like to give a huge shout out to the Mole Lake Casino, SFI, SCC Dementia Care Specialist, Rec Center, Elderly Program and the Accounting Department for sponsoring, organizing, chaperoning, supplying food and everything else that came along with this project.

We also thank Lamers Bus Lines and the best driver ever, Bob, for getting us there and back safely. He was so patient with our group and the traffic. We will for sure be requesting him for our next field trip.

Sokaogon Chippewa Community should be so proud of the Youth. They represented the Tribe with respect and were so well behaved that it is worth telling everybody. Thank you for that kids!

Summer Youth Workers Accomplish Many Projects

By Tesheena Honkala, Teen Workforce Development Coordinator

This past June, the ACE team hired 13 youth workers between the ages of 13 and 17. They began their work this Summer by helping with cleaning out houses and getting ready for the Strawberry Moon Pow Wow. The Youth had a stand at the Pow Wow. They cleaned and mowed the playgrounds, the baseball field, Mole Lake and Sand Lake beaches, boat landings and helped mow several yards.

This year was a little different from last year. On Tuesday, the Youth went to different departments, and some helped at various departments throughout the week. The Youth helped with the lodge build and planted new trees at Hoffman’s.

The ACE program offered a light breakfast and lunch to the Youth workers. During our lunch hours, we had speakers come in, including Lieutenant Tony Crum and Sergeant DJ Wilson with K-9 officer Thunder, from the Forest County Sheriff’s Department. Noel Vandiver from the WisDOT Highway Construction Skills Training Program and Vanny Poler also spoke to the Youth. Thank you all for taking time to speak.

The Youth participated in the Healing Circle Walk and Run on July 10th, and the language class and lacrosse on Wednesdays. Makoons, the language instructor, attended in person one day, which was a great experience. We did one concession stand day and the money made went to the Youth Center.

The Youth ended the program out at Hoffman’s where each Youth worker had the opportunity to wood burn their names onto a wooden apple and hang their names on a tree.

Thank you to all the Youth for all your hard work and dedication to the Summer program.

Participating Youth included Armando Aguirre, Makye Decorah Toyebo, Alexander McGeshick, Katrina McGeshick, Aiden Olds, Katie Quade, Zachary Randall and Alliyah VanZile.

A huge shout out to Alexandr Aguirre, Logan Munday, Derek Olds, Natalia Tuckwab and Elliott Amundson on your last Summer with this program. Congratulations and good luck in the future.

Grants Department Update

By Melanie Simpson, Grant Writer

The Sokaogon Chippewa Community has received a Native American Tourism of Wisconsin (NATOW) grant in the amount of $5,500. This grant was awarded to help support the 2023 Mole Lake Veterans Golf Tournament, the 2023 Strawberry Moon Pow Wow, and the 2023 Manoomin Pow Wow.

NATOW’s mission is to promote tribal tourism to the 11 Federally recognized tribes throughout Wisconsin. The purpose of providing these grants is to bring Wisconsin Native Americans, tourists, family and friends together to highlight the beauty and cultural diversity of Wisconsin tribes and reservations. By bringing this tourism in, it helps boost the local economy and generates revenue to fund essential services to the community.

The Mole Lake Veterans Golf Tournament was a great opportunity to strengthen the relationship between other Wisconsin Tribal and County Veterans Programs. The Veterans were able to participate in a stress relieving activity and were given resources to free information related to Veteran services. It was an honor to show appreciation to all of the Veterans and to remind them how valued they are as community members.

With the help of this grant, we were able to promote and fund the Strawberry Moon Pow Wow and the Manoomin Pow Wow. Tourists, family and friends were able to experience the Native American culture through traditional cuisine, song and dance while taking in the beautiful scenery of the Mole Lake Reservation.
