Speaking Something Good

Community News

February 16, 2023

Good Morning,

We hope you are doing well.

As you scroll down, you'll see the exciting news on the Café Manoomin and photos from this past Saturday's Valentine's Dance. It's heartwarming to see our generations come together. Thank you to everyone who attended!

You'll also see a story on the 40th anniversary of the Voigt Decision. GLIFWC has shared a new video that shows images of that time, and honors the challenges that Walleye Warriors faced during that period.

Casa Mexicana Coming to Manoomin Café

The Tribal Council has finalized a lease agreement between the Mole Lake Casino and Casa Mexicana to allow Casa Mexican to lease Café Manoomin.

The Café will remain until the end of March, and will then be closed for renovations and training. The expected opening date is May 1st.

From left to right: Charlie VanZile, Assistant General Manager at the Mole Lake Casino; Alejandro and Abigail Jacinto, owners of Casa Mexicana; Robert VanZile Jr, SCC Chairman; Rachel DeCorah Toyebo, SCC Secretary; Sonya Knueppel, SCC Treasurer; Leelyn VanZile, SCC Council Member 1.

Alejandro and Abigail Jacinto, owners of Casa Mexicana, shared their excitement to be a part of our community and in this business venture with the Tribal Council.

The restaurant will be similar to the Rhinelander location and menu with certain exceptions that will cater to local tastes.

More information will be shared as it becomes available.

Valentine's Dance Brings Generations Together

Last Saturday, the Rec Center hosted a generational Valentine's Dance. The festivities began with a prayer that was led by Tribal Elder Art VanZile. After the prayer, everyone was treated to a delicious lasagna dinner with garlic bread and salad. A big thank you to Anna Roberts for the lovely meal!

After dinner, the party began with cookie decorating and dancing. It was a wonderful evening with family, friends and good conversation.

I think everyone really enjoyed themselves, and we loved seeing the great turnout - young and old. We hope next year is even better and bigger!

Thank you to everyone who came and had a great night!

40th Anniversary of Voigt Decision

January 27, 2023, marked 40 years since the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit ruled in favor of Ojibwe reserved rights in the Wisconsin 1837 and 1842 Ceded Territory.

The GLIFWC Public Information Office is pleased to present our latest short film in the Ogichidaa Storytellers series Rise of the Walleye Warrior: Lac Courte Oreilles v. Voigt Decision, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the landmark case and its legacy in Ojibwe Country.

The title is intentionally worded to have a dual meaning - referring to Lac du Flambeau’s Tom Maulson as well as all the spearfishermen who faced off with angry mobs during the 1986-1991 protest era. The video is also designed to be forward-looking, promoting cooperation with resource management partners.

Miigwech and be well everyone!
