Boozhoo Gakina Awiya,
Over the past two weeks the LCO Public Relations Department has been contacted numerous times regarding a petition circulating that asks the LCO Tribal Governing Board to reverse their action to terminate LCO Health Center Director Sarah Cormell. The concern is whether tribal members may sign petitions when they work for tribal entities.
The right of tribal members to petition their government for the redress of grievances is a constitutional right articulated in Articles VI and VII of the LCO Constitution. The ability to engage this right is fundamental to the operation of the tribal government system and as a result is an integral aspect of tribal sovereignty.
The process for referendums is established in the Tribal Referendum Code.
Employees of the Tribe, who wish to engage in the referendum process should do so off the clock to ensure the process doesn't interrupt government operations.

TGB Hold Listening Session to Hear New Post Community Concerns
By Joe Morey
News Editor
The Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Governing Board (TGB) held a Community Listening Session in the community of New Post on Saturday, Sep. 21 to meet with community members and hear their concerns and questions. Several areas of concern were addressed at the meeting.
LCO Sec. Treasurer Michelle Beaudin told the members in attendance that the tribe has been working closely with Blue Stone Strategy Group, a strategic planning company that is Native-owned and works only with tribes.
"They are helping us with our businesses to turn them around and make them profitable," Beaudin said. "They are also helping us with our government structure and our finance department so that the tribe operates more efficiently."
LCO Vice Chairwoman said working with Blue Stone is very important. She said the financial department of the tribe was not in a good spot (regarding internal operating procedures) and Blue Stone is here to help the TGB fix that.
TGB from L-R) Chairman Louis Taylor, Tweed Shuman, Vice Chair Lorraine Gouge, Gary "Little Guy" Clause, Glenda Barber and Sec-Treasurer Michelle Beaudin.

Update on Tribal Office Expansion Plans
Submitted by Jason Weaver
LCO Grants Department
The Tribal Government has given direction to the Tribal Grants and Planning team to find funding to expand the existing Tribal office building. Many of the Tribal programs have seen unprecedented growth and have increased staff numbers that far exceed our office space. We have staff members working in tight quarters in the Court, legal, Child Support, I.T. and Indian Child Welfare programs. We also have secure filing space needs to comply with federal regulations that are taking up existing space. We don't have a secure lobby for our Tribal Court and that has been identified as a need. The siding and stone work around the building is in need of repair and replacement as well.
While child support is planning on moving to a new location the existing space is still not adequate for the number of staff on hand and new hires. Many of the departments have the ability to fund more professional and semiprofessional positions but the lack of office space limits the potential job growth.

Government-to-Government Partnership Agreement On Transportation Issues Continued
Wisconsin's 11 federally recognized tribal governments met with state and federal officials
today to update a commitment to partnership on transportation-related issues. The partnership agreement, initially launched in 2005, sets the framework for government-to-government cooperation on project development and labor issues that transcend state, federal and tribal jurisdictions.
"This agreement is about providing guidance and structure for us to enjoy a deeper and more meaningful understanding of our unique operational needs," said WisDOT Secretary-Designee Craig Thompson. "Our signatures today mark a new chapter in important relationships we want to continue cultivating for the benefit of our communities and future generations."
The partnership agreement has prompted initiatives among WisDOT and Wisconsin's tribal governments, such as the Inter-Tribal Task Force, annual consultation meetings and skills training programs in Native American communities.

Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College Receives Otto Bremer Trust Grant
Submitted by Jessica Wagner-Schultz, MNM
Director of Institutional Advancement
Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College recently received a $30,000 Otto Bremer Trust Grant.
The Otto Bremer Trust Grant's purpose is to provide micro-grants to assist students with emergency expenses that might threaten their ability to be successful in college.
"An unexpected car repair or medical bill can be the difference between staying in school or dropping out," said Charlotte Johnson, co-CEO and trustee, OBT. "The college's emergency fund helps students confronted with these challenges, and with a 91 percent retention or graduation rate among those who received a grant, that's an excellent return on a small investment."
The Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College Emergency Aid program provides student with up to $500 in emergency aid toward unexpected expenses such as child care, auto expenses, medical expenses, utility assistance, food or supplies, transportation, and more. Taking Care of Yourself During Common Cold Season
Gina Benson RN, BSN, PHN
Lac Courte Oreilies Community Health Center
Fall is here and winter is right around the corner... and so is the common cold season!
The common cold is a viral infection of the nose and throat (upper respiratory tract). While it is typically harmless, it doesn't feel that way. Children under age six are at greatest risk of catching colds. Healthy adults can expect to have a common cold about 2-3 times per year!
Symptoms of your common cold can include runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, congestion, slight body aches, low grade fever, sneezing and generally not feeling well. The color of discharge from your nose is not an indication of a bacterial infection, as the thickness and color of discharges changes as the cold runs its course.
There is no need to see your medical provider for the common cold virus, as your symptoms can be treated through LCO Pharmacy with self-care medications. For fever, slight body aches or sore throat you can take Tylenol or Ibuprofen. For nasal congestion you can use a decongestant nasal spray or saline nasal drops.

Have Diabetes? A Flu Shot Should Top Your Fall To-Do List
Submitted by Kay Searfoss
LCO Community Health Center
The leaves are turning, there's a chill in the air and that means it's time for your annual flu shot. If you haven't gotten vaccinated, it's time to reconsider, especially if you have diabetes. Flu can be more serious than you realize, and health officials say there are early signs that this flu season will be a bad one.
Many people with diabetes don't get the flu vaccine, according to a recent study. Why? Most thought they weren't at risk for complications, or they feared adverse reactions from the shot, according to the research. Despite these myths, people with diabetes are actually at higher risk for complications if they get the flu. And the influenza vaccination is safe, effective and lessens complications if you do get the flu.
