AN INVITATION TO PARISHIONERS
Hello! Your friendly neighborhood Music Director here to invite you to one of the most special services of our liturgical year: Bach Vespers in celebration of Trinity Sunday, which is this Sunday evening at 5:30 PM. Prelude music begins at 5:20. This year, the service is centered around a performance of one of Bach’s finest church cantatas, BWV 78, Jesu der du meine Seele (Jesus, you have freed my soul).
Perhaps no other composer throughout Western Music History is as celebrated as Johann Sebastian Bach. His influence has spread far and wide since his death in 1750, and he continues to inspire composers writing today. Church musicians are especially blessed in that Bach spent most of his career as a church musician, and the majority of his compositions are meant to be performed in Christian worship. Chief among these compositions are his church cantatas. The last 27 years of his life, Bach served as the Kantor (a Lutheran term for Music Director) of the Lutheran churches in Leipzig, Germany, and for his five years there, he wrote a cantata each week to be performed in Sunday worship. So, what are these works? They are, in essence, musical sermons, meant to illuminate theological and spiritual concepts and ideas, but also meant to move and soothe the soul.
So, what will you experience when you come to our Bach vespers service on Sunday, and why will it be worth your while to return to church if you have already come to the morning Eucharist? You will experience music that is simply some of the most sublimely beautiful ever written, and you will experience it in a liturgical setting that will provide greater meaning for both the music and poetry and give you spiritual sustenance for your own faith journey. You won’t have other opportunities to hear this repertoire in Asheville, as these works are best heard in a church setting. So, come one, come all on Sunday evening at 5:30! Bring your neighbors! Bring a friend!
See you there,

A Sparked Imagination: A Retreat for Creatives
Lake Logan, October 2-3, 2026
The last few years have been taxing. This retreat, led by author and priest Lauren Winner, aims to nourish and restore the imaginations of those who contribute to nourishing the imaginations of our community — as well as those who are just beginning to live open to their own creativity. To stretch and stock our imaginations, we will engage poetry, visual art, writing about visual art; delve into the histories of words; and practice thinking and writing metaphorically. We will also keep a good deal of silence and space in our day for reading and writing and walking and breathing.
Register here.
