Dear Trinity Community,

As we move into October, we can feel a slight change in the air, and we see signs of autumn all around us: pumpkins at the grocery store, Halloween decorations on porches, beautiful leaves starting to fall, and my personal favorite: apple cider. As All Saints’ Day approaches in just under a month, we, as Christians, have a good opportunity to reflect on what it means to live a holy life, a life dedicated to doing God’s work, just as Jesus did during his earthly ministry. Each year, on All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, we pause to remember the saints of the church and those dear to us who now rest in God’s loving presence. Their witness reminds us that holiness is not reserved for a few but is found in the daily work of love, service, and faith.

On Sunday, November 2, we will gather for our All Saints’ Dinner at 6:15 pm in Tuton Hall. This year’s dinner will feature a dinner-theater-style presentation by Becky Stone, a remarkable local storyteller specializing in African-American history and stories, world stories, and audience participation stories and songs. A special thanks to Debbie Cox and team for preparing what is sure to be a delicious meal. Our very own Trinity youth will serve the meal to raise money for the 2026 Youth Summer Experience. All tips and donations go directly toward making this life-changing trip possible for them. Following dinner, we will proceed to our Memorial Garden for a candlelight reading of the names of those interred there. Dinner is free, but reservations are required. Nursery care will be available for children aged five and under.

We hope that you will join us for this beautiful annual event.

With Joy and Gratitude,

Nanette Popa

Director of Children and Family Ministries

How Firm a Foundation

How Firm a Foundation. Each year, Trinity reaches out to members requesting a financial pledge for our mission and ministry for the coming year. On each pew is a sheet that outlines the process. Take a look! Visit the stewardship page on the Trinity website to make your pledge.

Newcomer’s Soirée

A Newcomer’s Soirée is being held at the home of the rector today, October 10 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. If you consider yourself a newcomer to Trinity, you are invited. We’ve formally sent an invitation to everyone who is new to Trinity, if we have their information. If you haven’t received an invitation, we don’t have your contact information. You are still invited! Send a note of your intention to attend to rebecca@trinityasheville.org

Dinner to Go

The Dinner To Go youth group fundraiser is on Sunday, October 12. Pickup is from 12:00 to 1:00. The dinner consists of poppy-seed chicken, rice, and a vegetable for $10. Please register online by Friday, October 10.

We Need Our Empty Red Bags

For the last Red Bag Sunday, we prepared 150 bags, handed out all but 33 (117), and 70 were returned. That means that 47 of our Red Bags are missing. If you took a Red Bag but didn't return it on Red Bag Sunday, please bring it back to the church as soon as possible so we will be ready to go for our next Red Bag event.

Used Glasses Drive

Throughout October, we’ll be collecting eyeglasses to donate to those in need. Hold on to your outdated prescription glasses! All eyeglasses in our lost and found will also be donated. Contact Van Joffrion with any questions.

Habitat for Humanity Episcopal House XVI

Volunteers have an opportunity to help build a new home and give someone in our community the gift of home ownership. Construction began on August 12, and we are coming up on the last three weeks. The roof is on the house at this point, so the remaining work is relatively easy. Volunteers with all levels of ability are encouraged to participate. Please sign up to volunteer on the way to Tuton Hall. A typical volunteer day lasts from 8:15 until 3:00, with fifteen-minute breaks in the morning and afternoon, as well as a thirty-minute break for lunch. Visit the Trinity website for the full story and to sign up online.

Adult Forum

Christianity 101 is the title of the current session of the Adult Forum, which meets in the Undercroft on Sundays from 9:30 to 10:30. The class will be held on October 12 and 26. Amy Peterson and Scott White will continue their discussion on the belief that God made us in God’s own image. This concept does not stand on its own. It’s part of an entire theological worldview concerning God, how God relates to humanity, and what God asks of humanity in return. Join the rector and the associate rector in a sustained exploration of the foundations of the Christian faith. What do we believe—and why? How do we live—and why?

Parents in Conversation

Parents in Conversation meets in the Clark Room during the Sunday formation hour (9:30–10:30) for informal conversations about life and parenting. All are welcome. Contact Rev. Amy with questions.

Godly Play

Godly Play takes place during the Sunday formation hour from 9:30-10:30. There are three classes: Godly Play 1 for 3-year-olds who are fully potty trained through PreK; Godly Play 2 for Kindergarten through 2nd grade; and Rite in the Middle for 3rd–5th grades. These classes are located in the downstairs children’s area (enter the church through the doors on the covered porch by the playground and immediately head down the stairs).

Children's Hour

Children’s Hour (ages 3–2nd grade) meets at 10:45 in the Undercroft for snacks, then moves to the Redwood Chapel for worship, featuring stories, songs, and prayers; children rejoin their parents after the Peace.

We have an immediate need for a volunteer to assist with Children’s Hour from 10:30 until the Peace on Sundays! No teaching required; help welcome children, serve snacks, and support their worship time. Reach out to Nanette Popa (nanette@trinityasheville.org) if interested or for more information.

Nursery Care

Nursery Care is offered from 9:15 am until after the 10:45 am service for infants through three-year olds who are not potty trained.

Middle School Class (Grades 6–8)

The class meets in Trinity’s youth area at 9:30 am on Sunday and can be accessed from the stairs to the right of the Tuton Hall kitchen or from the outside door into the same stairway. The classroom is on the left, past the game room.

High School Class (Grades 9–12)

The high school class meets in Trinity’s youth area at 9:30 am on Sunday. It’s located under Tuton Hall and can be accessed from the stairs to the right of the Tuton Hall kitchen from the outside door into the same stairway. The classroom is the first room on the right of the youth kitchen.

Additional Parking

Additional parking spaces are available at the Ravenscroft Office Suites at 29 Ravenscroft Drive, across the street from Trinity. A sign signifies parking for Trinity Church. Please reserve the parking closest to the church for those with mobility difficulties.

Midweek Eucharist

Every Wednesday, we offer a midweek worship service at 12:15 (ending around 12:45).

Rector's Bible Study Transforms to "Bible Discovery"

The long-standing Rector’s Bible Study is changing to “Bible Discovery with the Rector.” We’re meeting on Thursdays at 11:00 am on Zoom only. Our first session will examine what the scripture has to say about the character of God. Take a look at Exodus 34:6-7. What does it tell us about God's character? If you’ve been on the email list for the Rector’s Bible Study you will still get the day-of notification with the Zoom link. If you want to be on the list send a note to Rebecca Jenkins at Trinity at rebecca@trinityasheville.org.

Church Street Blood Drive

The Church Street Coalition is holding a mobile blood drive on Sunday, October 19, 8:00 am–2:00 pm. With the urgent need for blood donations right now, we’re able to offer extra incentives, and so all donors will not only receive the standard $20 e-gift card but also a bonus $20 e-gift card ($40 in rewards total, just for donating, which most beneficially saves up to three lives!), so this is really a win-win for the whole community! Visit the registration page and use sponsor code 13769 to register for this event.

Trinity Caregivers' Support Group

The Trinity Caregivers’ Group meets by Zoom every second Friday. We welcome all who care for a loved one(s), local or at a distance, diagnosed with some form of dementia. We share challenges and experiences. Dr. Corkie Morrill is a retired gereopsychologist, and Peggy Buchanan is a retired deacon and nurse. They facilitate the group. For information, contact Corkie Morrill by phone at 828-684-3972 or by email at corkiemorrill@charter.net.

Brotherhood of St. Andrew

Please join the Brothers of St. Andrew on October 11 for a service project, explained below. Here are some FAQs about the Brotherhood:

Q: What is the Brotherhood of St. Andrew?

A: Primarily, the Brotherhood is a men’s group. But it’s more than that. The Brotherhood was founded in 1883 as a society of men and boys devoted to prayer, study of scripture, and service.

Q: What is the commitment and how much does it cost?

A: There is no initial commitment. You can attend as your schedule and interest permit. The cost for an annual membership is $50. A life membership costs $1,000. There is funding for memberships for those unable to afford the dues. The hope is that with attendance and bonding, you will be called to membership and commitment. If you have been attending regularly, you should seriously consider membership. Later in the year, Scott will preside at a formal induction ceremony during the 10:45 service. Those who have joined will be formally inducted into the Brotherhood and presented with their pin of membership.

Q: How often does the group meet socially?

A: The group meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 5:30, usually at a local pub. The location is announced beforehand by email.

Q: How often does the group meet for prayer, study and discussion?

A: The group meets at church on the first Sunday of the month, at 9:30, before service. These gatherings start with prayer. The participants will engage in an experiential scripture discussion and collectively respond to questions designed to elicit how the passage is directing their lives. Sharing life experience is encouraged. There will be other programs as well.

Q: How often does the group meet for service projects?

A: This varies depending on the interest of the group. October 11 is a volunteer day with Habitat for Humanity. You may sign up for this event at: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C44ACAC2BA57-58849748-bosa

Q: How do I stay in touch?

A: We have a dedicated email list for those interested in the Brotherhood. If you have been receiving our emails about the social gatherings, you are on the list. If you would like to be on this list, please let Bob Zito know and he will add you to the list.

The Rise Against Hunger Experience provides a lasting, real-life impact as our group works together for a start-to-finish meal assembly experience to combine rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a packet of 20 vitamins and minerals into life-changing meal packages. This is a unique intergenerational ministry, and we therefore invite volunteers aged 6–90. The Patton Fund is paying for this event and donations are voluntary. You may sign up on the day of the event starting at 8:45. Volunteers should bring a baseball cap unless they want to wear a hairnet.

All Saints' Dinner

Our All Saints’ Sunday celebration will be November 2, at 6:15 pm, in Tuton Hall. Dinner is free, but reservations are required. Registration is now open. We celebrate All Saints’ Sunday with a special dinner, a focus on saints of the church, and a candlelight reading of the names of those interred in the Memorial Garden here at Trinity. This year, we are excited to have Becky Stone, a local performing artist and storyteller, as our featured presenter. Ms. Stone is an incredibly gifted, mesmerizing storyteller, and we look forward to a special evening with her. Our Trinity youth will be waiting tables to raise money for the 2026 Youth Summer Experience. Dinner is free, but all tips and donations go directly toward helping make it possible for the youth to participate in this life-changing trip. Thank you! Nursery care will be available for Trinitarians under 5 years old.

Evensong

Please plan to join us on Sunday, October 26 for our first choral evensong service of the program year. Our Chancel Choir will lead a traditional Anglican evensong service featuring works by Henry Purcell, Charles Wood, Dr. Kevin Seal’s setting of the Phos Hilaron, and Josef Rheinberger’s sublime Abendlied. The service will begin at 5:30 pm and will replace the regularly scheduled Celtic Eucharist.

Handbell Choir

Trinity’s Handbell Choir is looking for new members! All are welcome to join, although some music reading skills are helpful. The choir rehearses on Mondays, 4:30–5:30 pm, and plays periodically for 10:45 am worship. For more information, contact Kevin Seal at kevin@trinityasheville.org
