You’re a family caregiver to a young adult with intellectual disabilities. Each day you’re challenged to find inner strength that will motivate you to move forward in a positive direction. As caregivers, FLEXIBILITY, is one of our most valuable resources.
As you strive to creatively improve your child’s quality of life; the outside world constantly congratulates you on your resourcefulness and resilience.
As fall approaches we will be called upon to use all of our skills: flexibility, resourcefulness, positivity, and resilience — these are all critical skills needed as we seek ways to enhance our child’s daily life.
There is another useful skill you may find helpful:
PERSISTENCE
This may prove to be your most valuable resource as you seek positive directions needed to meet your child’s personal outcomes.
Throughout time, great things have been achieved by those who saw the value of being PERSISTENT.
Thomas Edison, who gave light to the world, performed thousands of tests for making lightbulbs. He didn’t give up! He said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work!” He continued to try to overcome adversity.
Just like Edison, you will come up against situations that present you with adversity. You get it! You will always remember— adversity happens to everyone. You just have to learn to handle it.
Embrace the new season as you practice useful coping skills. As you achieve new successes, remember to add KINDNESS. Kindness is your “..passport, that opens doors and fashions friends. It softens hearts and molds relationships that can last a lifetime.“
~Joseph Wirthlin
Now—go forward into the new season, confident that the dreams you have for you and your entire family ARE ~ Possibilities! You will use your newfound skills daily and you’ll amaze yourself by how effective they are.
I’ll be checking in on you next week to see how you’re doing!
