42nd Annual Ruthven Apple Festival Goes Virtual
Due to continued uncertainty and ongoing local and provincial health concerns related to COVID-19, the 2021 Ruthven Apple Festival will be presented again in a virtual format scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday, September 25th- 26th. All of the proceeds raised through this format will continue to go towards purchasing or maintaining accessible vehicles to help people with intellectual disabilities more fully participate in their communities. We are very excited to be able to celebrate our annual event and continue to provide fans of the festival with many of its popular elements.

The 2021 Virtual Ruthven Apple Festival will again appeal to all age groups. Events will include pre-recorded and live-streamed events, such as the annual Apple Peeling Contest to be held on Friday night at 7pm, entertainment, a virtual classic car show, and a cooking class. As well, apple pies and Ruthven Apple Festival apparel will be available to purchase online.

We have recreated the popular festival experience with virtual vendors and entertainment.

The annual Ruthven Apple Festival attracts thousands to Colasanti’s Tropical Gardens every fall and in its 41 year history has raised well over one million dollars in support of Community Living Essex County.

Look for more details and announcements on social media regarding the 2021 Virtual Ruthven Apple Festival on September 25th - 26th.

Ontario to Require Proof of Vaccination
in Select Settings
Ontario's vaccine certificate program is now in effect. As of yesterday, Ontarians are required to show proof of their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to access some non-essential businesses. We've included information below for how to show proof of your COVID-19 vaccine using your mobile device. Users are instructed to print or save their receipts as a PDF to a mobile device which can then be used as proof-of-vaccination. Starting October 22nd, the province will begin implementing a QR code and verification app.

Some places you will be required to show proof of vaccine include: indoors at restaurants, bars and nightclubs, meeting and event spaces, sporting events, recreation and fitness facilities (including gyms), casinos, bingo halls and other gambling establishments. See the article linked below for the full listing.

The Municipality of Leamington has implemented a COVID-19 Vaccination/Rapid Test Policy at Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre as of September 8, 2021.

The Town of LaSalle announced Proof of Vaccine Required at Vollmer Complex and LaSalle Civic Centre as of September 22, 2021.
New Names for COVID-19 Vaccines
The vaccines now have new names! It may take some getting used to, but the Pfizer-BioNTech shot is now officially called Comirnaty, the Moderna vaccine is now called SpikeVax, and AstraZeneca's version will be named Vaxzevria, according to Health Canada. To be clear, the new brand names come from the companies themselves, not Health Canada, and were part of the companies' application for approval.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, on September 30th has been created to give everyone an opportunity to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools, which more than 150,000 First Nations, Metis and Inuit children were forced to attend between the 1870s and 1997.

Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30th. Orange Shirt Day opens the door to conversation on all aspects of Residential Schools. People across Canada and beyond are encouraged to wear orange, and have meaningful discussions about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. It is a day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter.

The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.
