Have you ever wondered WHERE your kids, young or old, would be able to access a safe, inviting, fun environment? As families that include individuals with intellectual disabilities, we are often hesitant to introduce our loved ones to community-based activities.
WHY?
We wonder about safety, acceptance, and accessibility. We as Essex County residents have a unique opportunity to introduce our family members to an experience that has the potential to meet and exceed our expectations.
WHERE?
WETRA: Windsor Essex Therapeutic Riding Academy. This long-standing destination understands the needs of individuals whose daily lives are complicated by disabilities. As you contemplate the up-and-coming summer season, explore the day camp offerings at WETRA. What better place to enjoy interactions with farm life including open fields, barns, and animals! An added benefit? Making new friends.
Your family member will be giving back to the community too!
HOW?
Individuals with intellectual disabilities will be seen as active community members with abilities and challenges no different than everyone else. Why not shine a light on ability? Your entire family (son, daughter, sister, brother, extended family) will share in their family member’s new found joy!
Doors open when we are willing to take a chance! Embrace all that your community has to offer!

New Day took their meeting on wheels and headed to Charlotte's Freedom Farm in Dresden. New Day had a great turn out with over 18 people coming to the farm. One of the favorite animals at the farm was a five month old sheep-a-doodle puppy named Olive. Charlotte's Freedom Farm is home to over 200 rescue animals and some of these animals have disabilities. If you get a chance this summer, New Day recommends this day trip to everyone. Go out and support Charlotte's Freedom Farm.

FREE DOCUMENTARY SCREENING:
Unloved Huronia's Forgotten Children
|
|
Filmmaker Barri Cohen leads part detective story, part social history as she uncovers the truth about Alfie and Louis, her two long-dead half-brothers. They were institutionalized at the Huronia Regional Centre in Orillia in the 1950s, with one brother unceremoniously buried in secret in an unmarked grave as a small child. Their lives were cut short, but their story stands as a microcosm of the immense tragedy of the Western World's 20th-century disastrous treatment of intellectually disabled children and youth.

Staying Healthy Throughout the Summer
|
|
Most of us are exposed to too much ultraviolet radiation during the summer months according to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit. While the sun can produce harmful effects, staying inside isn’t the solution. Being outdoors has many benefits, both physical and mental. Children should be encouraged to play outside, following sun safety measures to stay healthy.
To have fun outside, these sun safety guidelines can help keep you safe:
- Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes that cover most of the skin. Consider wearing a hat with a wide brim to cover the face, head, neck, and ears.
- Wear close fitting/wrap-around sunglasses that have 100% UV protection.
- Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen (UVA and UVB protection) with an SPF of at least 30. It is important to know that no sunscreen provides 100% protection. Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin and be sure to reapply after sweating or swimming. Most adults need to use 2 to 3 tablespoons of sunscreen to cover their body; with 1 teaspoon of sunscreen to cover their face and neck.
- Use sunscreen lip balm to protect your lips.
-
Limit time in the sun when the UV Index is 3 or higher (Windsor’s current weather and UV index); this is often between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
- Find shade under a tree or bring your own shade using a large umbrella or pop-up cover (especially if you’re planning on being outdoors for an extended length of time).
- To prevent heat-related illnesses, drink plenty of water even if you don’t feel thirsty.
