An Island Adventure
Silvie and Kelly recently had a really fun day! They hopped onto a boat and made their way over to Peche Island. While they were there, they explored the island and checked out the beach. The best part was when they stopped to enjoy a beautiful picnic lunch. The sun was shining as they enjoyed the view, the company and their meal. It was a great adventure and made for a very memorable day.
Born to Ride
Mickey McCarthy loves Harley Davidson motorcycles. Last year, he attended the Hogs for Hospice event and watched all the bikes with an incredible amount of enthusiasm from the street in his home town. This year, Mickey did not want to only watch the event, he wanted to be in the event. After much preparation and his family's blessing, Mickey did just that. He connected with a support worker in our agency, Melissa Knight and made a game plan. Mickey himself raised $417.00 in donations for the event. Quite an achievement. With so much excitement, Mickey took the long ride around the county on the back of Jackie's bike. His family and support staff are so proud of him.
Waterfall Wonders
Nick and Hayden recently took a day trip to Niagara Falls! They were able to get up close to the amazing waterfall and snap a picture together. They spent the rest of their time checking out the local attractions and enjoyed a delicious lunch at Chucks Roadhouse – yum! They saw lots of cool things and had a great time together. It was a day full of excitement and laughs at Niagara Falls.
- Paid Caregiver Realities -
Finding qualified paid caregivers for our family members living with disabilities is an international dilemma. For families that include marginalized populations, the search is even more dire. You can click the link following to read an interesting editorial recently posted in Detroit Free Press titled Agency Overcomes Caregiver Barriers. It highlights other sources to find possible support workers. We as families, depend on supports like Community Living Essex County to provide us with support worker leads. It is always important for families to share possible untapped sources.
Together -ENSEMBLE- we can find supports that provide maximum positive outcomes if we continue to work collaboratively.
Ensemble, as the voice of families, is happy to announce that once again, a series of free, Unpaid Caregiver Appreciation social events, will be offered on a first come first served basis. These events will be starting in Fall 2023. Stay tuned as specific events and dates will be featured in future Possibilities newsletters.

“Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller

Post COVID-19 Condition Survey
Statistics Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada have launched the Canadian Health and COVID-19 Survey. There was an email sent out recently, encouraging the participation in the Canadian Health and COVID-19 Survey, focusing on Post COVID-19 Condition (PCC) or "long COVID." The survey aims to gather information on the long-term effects of COVID-19 and will be used to plan a provincial PCC response. Participation is voluntary, and the collected information will be confidential and used for statistical purposes only. The Ontario Ministry of Health is collaborating with Statistics Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada to ensure Ontario-specific data is collected, particularly from populations most impacted by PCC.
You can find more information about the following bye clicking the links below:

The survey will remain open until August 29, 2023. For any questions related to the survey, recipients are advised to contact SPB.PCIRB@ontario.ca.

Staying Healthy Throughout the Summer
Wear the Right Helmet
It is important to wear the proper helmet when cycling, inline skating and skateboarding. The additional cushioning in a helmet could save your life. In bicycle mishaps, the forehead usually makes first contact with the ground. With skateboarding, falls are more common and helmets are specifically designed to protect more of the back of the head. Unlike bicycle helmets, skateboard headgear is also designed to protect against multiple falls, whereas bicycle helmets should be replaced after one crash. This is why it is not only important to wear a helmet but, to wear the proper helmet. Click below to learn more from the Canada Safety Council.

Positive Thoughts
This is one of the most common grounding techniques, it helps you become aware of your surroundings, and your body’s relationship to them, anchoring you to the present moment.

5 things you see - Describe them in detail, either aloud or to yourself: What colour are they? Are there any cracks, scratches, little flaws? Any interesting little details?

4 things you can touch - Take a moment to feel the things on and around you. Are they cold to the touch, or warm? Soft or rough? What kind of textures are they?

3 things you can hear - Just listen. Can you hear your breathing slowing down? Any white or background noise - perhaps the humming of appliances?

2 things you can smell - What does your skin smell like? Your clothes? The objects you just touched? Are there any subtle scents in the air?

1 thing you can taste - Maybe you can still taste the last thing you ate or drank - are they still lingering? Imagine tastes you enjoy.
Coping with anxiety and finding techniques that work for you can be a long and difficult process or habit to get into. Use the phone numbers above as needed, and remember to always call 911 in emergency situations.
