Celine & Josh Hired at
ACCESS Community Services Through
Career Compass Employment Supports
The recipe booklet that was previously shared through the e-newsletter was created by Josh and Celine, who are employed at ACCESS County Community Support Services.

The purchase of produce bags from ACCESS County Community Support Services creates employment opportunities. This year ACCESS offered Tech Positions to Josh and Celine with the goal of having them work with a student job coach to research recipes that could be made with produce found in the weekly produce bags. Fun facts about vegetables were also found along the way! They went above and beyond to make the recipes they found. They both really enjoyed trying new things and having this great employment opportunity.
Supported Decision Making For Our Loved Ones
"Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won't come in."
Isaac Asimov
As our family members with disabilities become adults, many caregivers are surprised to learn that they have few legal rights to act on their behalf. If determined that family member lacks legal capacity, they may have few rights.

Instead of this being a frightening prospect for families and their loved ones, if we prepare, it can be an opportunity for supported decision making for our loved ones to maintain the power, choice, and control over the decisions that impact their life.

Spotlight on Transformation
Transformation can be slow. There has been a lot of talk throughout the pandemic about the speed with which our world changed and is changing. That is definitely true, but there are other ways in which transformation happens more slowly. Sometimes you even need to take a couple of steps backwards in order to move forward again.

There are plenty of memes online with this theme:
  • You wouldn’t plant a seed and then dig it up every few minutes to see if it has grown. Have patience, stop overthinking, and keep watering your seeds;
  • Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly;
  • Every success story is a tale of constant adaption, revision, and change.

As vaccination rates continue to rise, and COVID rates decrease further, more changes are coming in our lives. Many of us are eager to move back as quickly as possible to the way things used to be. It sometimes takes longer than we would like for the world to be as ready for us as we are for it.

Community Living Essex County would like to thank all our partners – and especially our hard working, dedicated employees – for their patience during this time. There is so much that we want to do, and the only way we will get there is by continuing to work together.

Dad Builds Exoskeleton So Son Can Walk
A robotic engineer has given his son the gift of mobility. Oscar Constanza, 16, gives the order and slowly but surely a large frame strapped to his body lifts him up and he starts walking.

Fastened to his shoulders, chest, waist, knees and feet, the exoskeleton allows Oscar - who has a genetic neurological condition that means his nerves do not send enough signals to his legs - to walk across the room and turn around.

The exoskeleton, an outer frame that supports but also simulates body movement, has been sold to dozens of hospitals in France, Luxembourg and the United States.
