A Tale of Two Sisters
“The perspectives she gained reinforced her instinctive and lived conviction that family members can be positive agents for change in the lives of loved ones with disabilities.”
                                                                                                 Mollie O’Keefe
Siblings can have an important part in supporting their siblings with intellectual disabilities to live their best lives.

Mollie O’Keefe observed her parents advocate for Fran throughout their childhood in 1980s Ireland and has now stepped in to take an active role in supporting her sister.

Bothered by the limited options for Fran, Mollie has worked to support families and people with intellectual disabilities to develop the life they want.

Free Fishing and Ontario Parks Day-Use This Father’s Day Weekend
The Ontario government is making it possible for families to fish for free this Father’s Day weekend. On June 19 and 20, Ontario families can enjoy fishing province-wide without having to purchase a licence or carry an Outdoors Card.

If you and your family are fishing during licence-free fishing periods or at other times, it’s important to help keep recreational fisheries healthy for future generations by:
  • following conservation licence catch limits
  • obeying size limits and sanctuaries
  • following all other fishing regulations.

To celebrate all Ontario families, the province is also offering free day-use permits at more than 100 Ontario Parks on Sunday, June 20, 2021. To guarantee access to 17 select popular provincial parks, book a daily vehicle permit in advance of your visit. Please visit www.ontarioparks.com/dayuse for more information and a list of participating parks.

Families that take part in these activities are reminded that under Step 1 of the Roadmap to Reopen, outdoor gatherings are permitted up to 10 people.

Early Planning Toolkit
For Parents With a Child With a Disability Ages 2 to 10
We all share the same dream for our children—a life filled with friends, joy and opportunities. As a parent of a child with a disability, you already have a lot on your plate. But there are things you can do now that will make a huge impact on your child’s future.

The Early Planning Toolkit will get you started. Below are the Early Planning Toolkit components.
Medical Safeguarding of Vulnerable Patients

Your loved ones deserve the best care even in the worst times.

Hospital admission presents challenges to quality medical care for people with disabilities. Personal care, communication, support and advocacy are essential to maximizing health outcomes.

Discrimination and misunderstanding about quality of life measures are threats to the lives of disabled patients requiring intervention and protection by loved ones and allies.

In less than two hours, you will learn a framework and strategies for being an effective medical advocate for people with disabilities who require inpatient hospital care.

Presented by Good Things in Life, sponsored by Community Living Ontario.

June 23rd, 2021 9:00 am - 12:00 pm or 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm.
A Look Back at 60 Years of
Community Living Essex County

Community Living Essex County is celebrating our 60th anniversary this year!

To celebrate, we're looking back at important events, milestones and stories from the past six decades.

This week, we're featuring the very first Ruthven Apple Festival! In 1979, a group of volunteers from the community of Ruthven came together to start the very first farmers market and Ruthven Apple Festival. This event is still held every year at the end of September.
