Celebrating Excellence

Last week, Jade Sutherland was honored with the Award of Excellence at Leamington District Secondary School. Surrounded by her family, school staff, peers, and support workers, Jade’s dedication and hard work were celebrated as she received this prestigious award, marking a significant milestone in her academic journey. Congratulations, Jade!

Engaging the Senses

Tom had the chance to experience the Multi-Sensory Event hosted by Autism Ontario at the Gino A Marcus Community Centre last weekend, where he explored a calming, person-centered space designed to engage all five senses. The environment blends sights, sounds, textures, and motion, offering a tranquil setting that can be customized to meet individual sensory needs and goals. The event provided 45-minute timeslots for participants. It was a meaningful opportunity for relaxation and sensory awareness, creating a supportive and peaceful experience for Tom and other attendees.

Festive Flair

It’s never too early to get into the holiday spirit, and Bri is leading the way with her festive flair! Bri has already kicked off the celebrations by showing off her dazzling Christmas-themed nails. The bright colors, glittering designs, and holiday-inspired patterns are the perfect way to add a little extra cheer to the season. Bri’s early festive spirit is contagious, spreading joy and excitement as we count down to the most wonderful time of the year.

Fall Clean-Up

Earlier this month, Darius made the most of a beautiful fall day, out in the yard with his leaf blower, keeping everything clean and tidy. It was the perfect way to spend a crisp autumn afternoon—enjoying the fresh air, watching the colorful leaves swirl around, and getting the yard ready for the colder months ahead.

Starting the Day with a Smile

Mason had a fantastic time enjoying breakfast at his local McDonald's earlier this week. He enjoyed everything about his visit, from his favorite menu items to the warm and welcoming atmosphere. It was a simple, fun outing that made for a perfect start to his day, and the big smile on his face said it all!

Local Treasures: Colasanti's Fall Fun

Last month, Nancy and Cathy had a lovely day at Colasanti’s, taking in the colorful fall displays and exploring the different attractions. They enjoyed seeing the animals, with the friendly goats being their favorite part of the visit. The goats were so playful and curious, making their visit fun and exciting. It was nice way to spend time together and enjoy the sights and sounds of the fall season!

Collecting Autumn's Colours

Brandie enjoyed a peaceful mid-November morning walk through her neighborhood, taking in the cool air and the colors of fall. She stopped at Buster Reaume Park, where she wandered through the crunchy leaves, enjoying the calm of the park. Inspired by the beauty around her, she gathered a handful of colorful leaves and decided to bring them home to enjoy or maybe use for a craft.

From Contest to Community

Lindsay and Kate recently delivered a generous collection of donations gathered during the WOW! Factor's recent porch decorating contest. The contributions were dropped off at the Amherstburg Community Services Food Bank, as well as at the Harrow Pantry, and LaSalle Food Bank. It’s a heartwarming reminder of the power of community and the impact of giving back.

Happy Birthday, Marlene!

Marlene marked her 44th birthday this weekend with a celebration filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable moments. She enjoyed a day of fun, good food, and great company, making it a truly special occasion!

#WaitingToBelong - Call For Stories

In September, Community Living Ontario launched the #WaitingToBelong campaign to advocate for the elimination of the Developmental Services waitlist, which currently impacts over 50,000 individuals in Ontario. The campaign calls on people with intellectual disabilities and their families to share their stories, highlighting how waiting for essential services affects their lives, from challenges in employment and community participation to frustration and uncertainty about the future. By sharing these personal experiences, individuals can help raise awareness and push for the necessary government action to provide the support needed for everyone to truly belong. Has the calendar got you scurrying in all directions? Is there nowhere to escape the sights, sounds, and aromas of the season? How can we block out these haunting reminders of all the unfinished tasks that we are expected to complete?

  • Purchases, cards, phone calls, baking, decorating, concerts, open houses, etc.?

Are you left with any free time to care for yourself? It’s critical that we don’t neglect ourselves as we focus on the needs of everyone else.

Eric Goff, of empowerability.org, has strategies to help caregivers remain grounded while remembering to "recharge without guilt."

  1. Take mini breaks – a 10-minute walk, reading, daydreaming.
  2. Trade off with another caregiver – a time to “reset” and refresh yourself.
  3. Use your personal network for support – family, friends, neighbors (even for an hour).
  4. Paid help – advertise and find someone to meet YOUR needs.

If all else fails, step back and reward yourself for doing your BEST! Only you know how many challenges you have successfully embraced and conquered. Give yourself a hug! You are a valued contributor to everyone—the individual you support, your family, your friends, and your community.

Well done!! You should know that you are an inspiration to everyone!

NOW— for a quiet corner, favorite music, and a preferred beverage—exciting days ahead!! 🎉🎉🎉

RELAX and RECHARGE!!

Happy December 😊
