Enjoying a Performance at the Capitol Theatre
Jessica, Craig and Tim attended West Side Story at the Capitol Theatre Windsor. They loved sitting in the front row, and even got to meet one of the marketing directors at intermission! It was a lovely time, and a wonderful performance put on by the Arts Collective Theatre, a not-for-profit organization committed to enhancing the well-being of the Windsor Essex community through theatre-based practices.

Call for Participation: The Evaluation Committee
Are you interested in helping us improve?
One of the next steps in the agency’s evolution of supports and services is to create a committee to oversee the evaluation of agency initiatives and transformation efforts. The Committee will help to determine whether agency goals are being achieved, what is working and not working, and the reasons why. The Committee will contribute to the development of evaluation strategies and tools, comprehensively analyze data, report findings, and make recommendations to senior leadership.
We are looking to include people served, families, direct support professionals and Admin/HR employees.

Ensemble's Creative Families
October 22nd marked the kickoff of Ensemble’s FIRST Caregiver Appreciation event. Families providing unpaid 24/7 care for their adult children with intellectual disabilities, provide immeasurable daily support. Unpaid family caregivers make the possibility of achieving meaningful lives for their adult children a reality. Their unwavering belief that all Canadian citizens deserve the chance to achieve their maximum potential to live a full life gives families the drive to continue to reach for the stars.
As families, we are very aware of the need to connect and to support one another as we share life’s realities - together - ENSEMBLE.
The featured weekend event in Kingsville was made possible due to the generous financial support of the Ontario Caregiver’s Association and the ongoing support of Community Living Essex County.
The valuable contributions families make to the daily lives of adult family members with intellectual disabilities cannot be stressed enough. In recognition of this contribution, Ensemble will continue to offer FREE caregiver events. Stay tuned!
Future events will be featured in the ‘Possibilities’ newsletter and will be made available on a first come first served basis. Check out our photos from our first event.
Unpaid caregivers are a valued family voice!

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month!
NDEAM (National Disability Employment Awareness Month) isn't over yet! The Career Compass team continues to highlight inclusive employers across Essex County by presenting Inclusive Employer window clings. This is our first year presenting employers with these and they are honoured to receive them. Keep an eye out for businesses in your area with the window clings proudly displayed.
Don’t forget that you can play a part in enhancing inclusion in the workforce by referring an employer to the Career Compass team. The employer hires a person receiving supports and they work successfully for 6 weeks; you get a $50 gift card of your choice! On Thursday, October 21st we wore purple and blue in recognition of the official day for LightItUpForNDEAM. Together with the Windsor Essex Employment Group and ODEN, we hosted an employer engagement breakfast to share the importance of being an inclusive employer. Local businesses and municipalities across the country lit up their buildings.

Mindfulness and Caregiving
Have you ever driven your car to a familiar place while totally lost in your thoughts? You arrive at your destination without being aware of your experience of driving there. Sometimes we experience the same kind of “autopilot” when interacting with our loved ones.
Through mindfulness practice, we can explore a deeper moment-to-moment awareness of ourselves. By becoming more aware of our feelings and body sensations, we create greater freedom and choice in what we think, say and do.

Free Virtual Training Program for Autism and Mental Health Providers in Ontario!
Autistic children and youth who have co-occurring mental health challenges often struggle to access mental health treatments due to limited service provider capacity and siloed service delivery models.
Children’s Mental Health Ontario (CMHO), in partnership with Autism Ontario and Dr. Jonathan Weiss, has developed a bilingual training program to build both sectors’ capacity in delivering integrated mental health services for autistic children and youth. These virtual sessions are designed to help providers enhance their expertise in treating and supporting autistic children and youth who have mental health challenges and their families.
Attendees will receive foundational knowledge about autism and mental health within an interprofessional education context. Participants will review core content regarding the broad spectrum of needs that are common for autistic youth; practical conceptualizations of mental health; up-to-date evidence about the causes of mental health problems for autistic youth; and psychosocial interventions to address symptoms. The regional focus will reinforce existing relationships between providers in both sectors and build new ones, setting the stage for increased collaboration by connecting to others who share similar foundational knowledge.
Training programs are taking place November 1st - November 3rd.

Technology to Support Independence
Join DSO Housing Navigators for a virtual presentation on various types of technological assistance available today and how it might be used to support independence. While technology can never replace human connection, it can certainly help to increase independence thus decreasing the need (and expense) for human “just in case” supports.
