A Virtual Celebration of 60 Years
Community Living Essex County celebrated it's 60th Anniversary virtually on September 9th. The meaningful milestone was celebrated by taking a look back at our history, commemorating our achievements, hearing from guest speakers, and of course drawing the names of the winners of our 60 for 60 Anniversary Raffle.

Leading up to the event, we have been highlighting different events and moments throughout our history on social media and our Possibilities eNewsletter. Last month, we buried a time capsule on the property of our main office. The organizing committee gathered items to include in our time capsule that were representative of milestones in our history or significant events from our past 60 years. This will be opened in 40 years, for our 100th Anniversary in 2061. If you haven’t seen our video going over the different items in our time capsule, we encourage you to go to our Facebook page and watch this video.

The virtual celebration event included videos, two of which are linked below, showing our growth through the decades, highlights of our organization’s achievements, and a congratulatory video reel with messages from a variety of stakeholders, including New Day, Ensemble, and community partners. We also heard from those who had a front row seat to our history – and the impact it had on them personally through a series of Reflection videos. The evening concluded with a champagne toast to Community Living Essex County and 60 years of inspiring possibilities.

Happy 60th anniversary to everyone who is a part of the Community Living Essex County family!

Ensemble: A Resource for Families
Ensemble is a parent-directed resource for families caring for a child with a disability that provides support from birth through adulthood. The name, Ensemble, is French for “together” and was chosen for the strength and resiliency found in the connections built between families and within the community.

Ensemble inspires possibilities for children by promoting family leadership so that families thrive and become active members in the community.

Ensemble was founded in 2000 by two moms whose lives have been affected by their children’s diagnosis of a disability. These moms understood the importance of connecting to others as the first step in helping families cope with the challenges of raising a child with a disability.

Virtual Supports - StrongerU Fitness
Emily from StrongerU Fitness continues to motivate us to stay active and form healthy habits year round! In fact, Emily reached out to us recently to tell us how impressed she was with the fitness group, as they have really embraced their new dance moves and drum cardio sessions! She said, “I introduced brand new music and moves to the group last class and this was only their second class with the new choreography. THEY DID AMAZING! The group is super in sync and look like they are performing in a show instead of attending an exercise class.”

As you can see from the photos, this is a fitness class that is enjoyed immensely. Everyone fully participates and they encourage one another throughout the class. This regular routine will be especially important as we begin to move toward seasons that don’t allow for outdoor activities.

Thank you again, Emily Johnson from StrongerU Fitness, for always knowing how to make these classes FUN!

Community Living Essex County Featured in The @Enbridge Blog!
Check out the awesome blog post from Enbridge, featuring Community Living Essex County!

This year, Enbridge provided $8,000 to Community Living Essex County as part of their commitment to the communities near their operations. The funding helped to support our Virtual Supports. Enbridge also supported a virtual holiday party at the end of 2020, where people receiving supports logged on to celebrate the holiday season together, even if the pandemic meant they had to be apart.
Let's Talk About Ableism
Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital (Holland Bloorview) launched year five of their Dear Everybody anti-stigma campaign for kids and youth with disabilities by urging Canadians to talk about ableism. According to a recent survey by Canadian polling firm Leger, about 95 per cent of respondents understand the meaning of terms like racism and sexism, while only a third can define ableism.

Ableism is discrimination towards someone based on their abilities and results in favouring those who do not have a disability. This creates the stigma that sees people with disabilities as being inferior to others – less worthy of respect and less able to contribute or participate. Ableism comes in many forms and is present in schools, workplaces and the media. Holland Bloorview are asking the public to confront ableism head on so that impolite stares, name-calling, exclusionary activities or inaccessible public spaces are no longer barriers to a future where everybody belongs.

Supplies
  • 2 sheets of clear contact paper (approximately 13×9″)
  • 1 construction paper apple frame
  • 1 green construction paper leaf
  • 1 black construction paper stem
  • red, yellow and green tissue paper cut into approximately 1 - 2″ squares
Peel one sheet of contact paper and place it sticky side up. Add an apple frame, stem, and leaf onto the piece of contact paper.
Add one piece of tissue paper at a time to fill in the centre of the apple overlapping pieces of tissue paper to fill the whole space of the apple.
Once the apple is completely filled with tissue paper pieces, take a second sheet of contact paper and stick it on top of the tissue paper. This helps to “seal” all of the pieces in place. Trim the excess contact paper from the edges of the apple.
